Designing churches is a calling for some architects

Steve Upham didn’t mean to get into the architecture of sacred spaces. When he was an undergraduate at Texas A&M University, one of his professors required his students to work for a real client, and Upham reached out to a friend’s father, who was on the building committee of a local church.

Now, at 63, his relationship to church design has changed: The president at Crosspointe Church Architects in Houston, Upham has built nearly 300 churches, and every project he takes on, he said, illuminates his faith.

The architecture trend dividing London’s elites

One of London’s most unusual and extravagant luxury trends might be its gigantic basements.

Newcastle University professor Roger Burrows and his co-authors collected data on every London basement construction project from 2008 to 2019 and mapped it. These basements were classified in the research as standard, large, and mega-basements — the latter containing multiple levels and extending beyond the footprint of the house. A combination of historic preservation laws, rapidly ballooning property values, and changing tastes has led to a boom in basement construction for the city’s wealthiest homeowners.

Though less celebrated at the time - the u-shaped dwelling designed with light stucco and glass walls above a fieldstone base, was one of a string of homes designed by Breuer that would forever alter the arc of residential architecture in this picturesque New England town.
