Sustainable HVAC Design: Using Air Movement in Air Conditioned Buildings

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:
1. Identify the factors that affect thermal comfort 
2. Explain the sustainability benefits of a design strategy that uses air movement in conjunction with traditional air conditioning
3. Describe how elevated air speed can improve building IAQ
4. Identify the factors that affect thermal comfort and the basics of ASHRAE Standard 55 requirements in LEED v4.1 BD+C
5. Understand how ASHRAE Standards 55 and 90.1 are applied in air conditioned spaces
6. Discuss how air movement can assist with meeting the energy performance requirements in LEED v4.1 BD+C and v4.1 O+M

Consider a Year-end Contribution to the AIA Dayton Architectural Scholarship Fund

Before you close out your 2020 books, please consider a contribution to the AIA Dayton Architectural Scholarship Fund, administered by the Dayton Foundation and AIA Dayton. The fund was created in 1991 by Lynn App, Emeritus AIA, and has grown in value over the years to more than $120,000. Scholarship awards are made each year to deserving students in the Miami Valley attending an NAAB accredited college/university.

AIA Ohio Programs
AIA Ohio Honor Awards Jury Call for Candidates

AIA Ohio is seeking candidates to serve on the 2021 Honor Awards Jury. The jury will be composed of five individuals, selected by the 2021 AIA Ohio President, Karen Planet, AIA. The jury will include an AIA Ohio Gold Medal recipient, a member from an AIA Ohio Gold Medal Firm, and three AIA Ohio members selected from a pool of candidates submitted via the AIA Ohio Honor Awards Jury Application.

The Honor Award Jury will:
• Evaluate all submissions for AIA Ohio Honor Awards against each award's criteria 
• Document evaluations, including each submission's strengths and weaknesses, in writing and submit to the AIA Ohio Board
• Select a Chair who will present the submissions for Honor Awards with the written evaluations to the AIA Ohio Board in July

Apply online to be considered for the AIA Ohio Honor Awards Jury. Applications must be submitted by Dec. 20.

This course is worth 2 Credits and will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-6:45. Note: This hybrid format will meet in person one day per week (day TBD) with online content.

AIA Dues Adjustment Program Information

AIA dues notices are due by January 15. For members with hardships, AIA is offering its Dues Adjustment Program again this year. This program is for members with a medical disability, those taking sabbatical or family leave, or members who are unemployed or partially employed. Contact AIA Dayton at 937-291-1913 for a form.

ABI October 2020: As the decline in billings continues to slow, architecture firms report an increase in contracts signed for new work

Business conditions at architecture firms moved slowly towards recovery in October, as the pace of the decline in firm billings continued to slow. The ABI score rose slightly from September to a score of 47.5 in October, indicating that the share of firms seeing their billings decline shrank further (an ABI score below 50 indicates a billings decline)..

Architects face data, culture gaps in fighting climate change

A new study published today by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) finds that data and culture gaps are obstacles architects are facing in fighting climate change.

The report, Sustainability in the Architect’s Journey to Specification, identified a number of common obstacles that could be improved by the building products industry to help architects support climate action, including:

Supplying useful, timely, and accurate product information and data.
Reducing barriers—primarily high costs–to products to increase adoption of sustainable products, especially as clients are increasingly concerned about sustainability being too cost-conscious in the short term.

Autodesk acquires architect software firm Spacemaker for $240 million

(Reuters) - Autodesk Inc ADSK.O on Tuesday said it acquired Spacemaker, a Norwegian firm whose software is used by architects to create and evaluate buildings or urban developments, for $240 million.

San Rafael, California-based Autodesk is a major supplier of the three-dimensional design software that architects use to create structures. Oslo-based Spacemaker’s software pulls in data about a potential building site such as the surrounding terrain, weather patterns, traffic patterns and information about zoning rules and then uses artificial intelligence to generate a range of options for how architects can get the most out of the space.

As office buildings empty out, here’s one creative use for all of that space

Offices around the U.S. are sitting empty, as the pandemic has forced many employees to work from home. Some of these offices will eventually come back to life, but others may lay fallow indefinitely. But, as one project in California shows, they don’t have to fall completely out of use. A formerly vacant office building there has been converted into a new school.

The Pantheon: The ancient building still being used after 2,000 years

When visitors walk into the Pantheon in Rome and encounter its colossal dome, they may experience the same theatricality as its guests nearly 2,000 years ago.
"Anyone who steps inside the Pantheon immediately feels the crushing weight of human history, but also the incredible lightness of human creativity," said John Ochsendorf, professor of architecture at MIT and former director of the American Academy in Rome.

Hotel, home and "hut" among architecture winners

A hotel, home and a "hut" are among seven buildings designed by central Ohio architectural firms recognized this week in the annual American Institute of Architects contest.

The buildings were chosen from 57 entries, and illustrate the breadth of work being done by Columbus-area architects and designers.
