Event Recap

Shuttered no more, the Dayton Arcade has been restored to all its splendor and is once again the center of a vibrant downtown Dayton.

It was only fitting that AIA Dayton chose to hold its Focus on Design Awards Celebration in the rotunda, amidst the most spectacular view in all of Dayton.

On December 1, AIA Dayton recognized member firms for outstanding design projects completed since 2016. This salute to design excellence was established to promote and focus attention on Miami Valley architecture firms producing quality and high performance design in adherence to the American Institute of Architect’s 10 Principles of Livable Communities.

Has remote work changed the architecture profession for good?

When COVID-19 hit in 2020, architect Carol Kurth, FAIA, never anticipated that the pandemic would have a long-term impact on her firm operations. Conducting business via virtual meetings on Zoom and Microsoft Teams has been an unforeseen adjustment, one that still raises mixed sentiments. “There are so many pros and cons and I find both sides to be true in this unique scenario,” says Kurth, the principal of her namesake architecture and interiors studio in Bedford, N.Y.

For the last two years, architectural practices have remained largely resilient and adaptable. Despite the profession's strong culture of in-person collaboration, 72% of firms afforded full-time or nearly full-time remote work options for employees in 2020, according to the 2021 AIA Compensation Report.

AIA's Small Firm Compensation Report reveals how small firms weathered the pandemic

As architecture billings continue a strong comeback this year, the AIA Small Firm Compensation Report details pandemic impacts to salaries, employment levels, and firm culture in this important segment of the profession. The Small Firm Compensation Report details how sole proprietorships and firms with fewer than three architectural staff employees experienced the 2019-2021 economic rollercoaster.
