AIA Dayton Student Design Program Announced and Seeking Donations from Firms

Our 2022 high school student design competition will be soon underway, and we are asking for your support! Please consider donating as a firm and/or individual to support future architects and designers. Donations are needed for the college scholarships, book awards, registration sponsorships, and event costs, such as refreshments and T-shirts. Any amount is appreciated.

Contact Alex Bohler at [email protected] or Maggie Beecroft at [email protected] to donate or learn more. Thank you for your support!

This year's program is to create a welcome center that would create a space for introduction to the opportunities that a makerspace can provide. The site will be an addition as an entryway to the existing hangar and a welcome center area for kids/adults/children. The center will provide spaces to sit and learn about the makerspace, becoming a member and to partner with the Westside Makerspace. The site is located at the existing Wright Company Factory in Dayton, which was the first in America built for the purpose of manufacturing airplanes.

Event Recap

Shuttered no more, the Dayton Arcade has been restored to all its splendor and is once again the center of a vibrant downtown Dayton.

It was only fitting that AIA Dayton chose to hold its Focus on Design Awards Celebration in the rotunda, amidst the most spectacular view in all of Dayton.

On December 1, AIA Dayton recognized member firms for outstanding design projects completed since 2016. This salute to design excellence was established to promote and focus attention on Miami Valley architecture firms producing quality and high performance design in adherence to the American Institute of Architect’s 10 Principles of Livable Communities.

A transparent swimming pool suspended between two buildings at the Embassy Gardens development in London gained huge attention this summer as aerial footage of residents enjoying the facility on a hot day went viral.

The industry creating a third of the world's waste

We now smash, grab and pull some 100 billion tonnes of raw material out of the fabric of the planet in just a single year. That’s equivalent to destroying two-thirds of the mass of Mount Everest every 12 months.

Roughly half of the raw materials we extract go into the world’s built environment. Construction creates an estimated third of the world's overall waste, and at least 40% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions. Compare that to the 2-3% caused by aviation, which people fret far more about.
