Ohio Code Updates - Impacts to Engineers and Architects

Speaker: Patrick Fernbach Principal, Director of Mechanical Engineering, KLH Engineers

Where: Engineer's Club of Dayton, 110 E. Monument Avenue, Dayton

Codes and Regulations Description:

Ohio has adopted updated codes. The previous mechanical and building codes were based on the 2015 I-codes series and the energy code was based on the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code. The updated 2024 codes will update all Ohio codes to be based upon the 2021 I-codes series including the energy code. This is a major change, spanning updates from 2012/2015-2021. Patrick will cover the changes to the mechanical code and its impact on architects and the engineering community. Changes to the energy code will also be covered with some highlights on changes to the building codes that impact coordination between architects and engineers.

Learning Objectives:

  • The program will cover how the mechanical code changes will impact coordination between architects and engineers. We will investigate the need for a common goal of producing a more sustainable building. Of highest priority is the health and the safety of the building’s occupants.

  • We will review how the changes to the section of the mechanical code relating to the building envelope requirement of ASHRAE 90.1-2019 will further the goal of healthier, more comfortable, and more efficient buildings.

  • Attendees will understand how specific changes such as the air leakage testing, and commissioning requirements of ASHRAE 90.1-2019 will impact the health and wellness of the occupants.

  • We will review the relationship of building energy performance in the context of reducing overall energy consumption and carbon emissions for a more positive, healthier environmental impact.

AIA Ohio 2024 Early Professional Friendly Firm Program

This AIA Ohio program celebrates firms who offer exceptional support and opportunities for their early professionals. Additionally, the program seeks to foster a dialogue within firms across the state with the objective of creating new policies and practices that promote innovation, development, and progressive workplaces for the future members of the design profession. AIA Ohio expects that early professionals will consider firms that have earned this designation to assist them as they look match their skills with firms’ values as they seek employment.

Applicants will be required to complete a 53 question survey worth 107 possible points that includes questions from across 6 categories. These questions cover an array of areas critical to developing EP Friendly Firms. The survey is open now, and will close on March 1. Applications will be scored and firms will be notified by March 31. Click here to download the survey questions and point values in advance of your application.

Why Seattle Seahawks legend Michael Bennett left the NFL to become an architect

Anyone who’s ever watched a single game of American football, which is notorious for its unapologetic, helmet-clashing violence, knows that players aren’t in it forever. The average NFL player retires before they hit 30. When they do, many pursue football-adjacent careers in coaching, scouting, or sports media—but very few choose to go to architecture school.

Michael Bennett is an exception. The Super Bowl champion and three-time Pro Bowl defensive end, mostly for the Seattle Seahawks, hung up his cleats in 2020 at age 33. Since then, he has studied design at Seattle’s Heritage School of Design, then architecture at the University of Hawaii, and he is launching his own practice called, Studio Kër, next month.
