Comparative Study of Wood and Aluminum Windows in Commercial Buildings (1.0 AIA CES HSW)

Date: Tuesday, April 19, 2022
Time: 4:00 - 5:30 PM
Location: Pella Windows & Doors, Cross Point Shopping Center, Centerville

Both wood and aluminum windows are being used extensively in today’s commercial and institutional buildings, especially in education, health care, and offices. Using project case studies from across the United States, this program examines how window selection criteria (aesthetics, cost, energy efficiency, and sustainability) impact the design process.

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe how the aesthetic attributes of wood and aluminum windows contribute to interior environments that are livable, comfortable, productive, safe, and beautiful.

  • Identify the initial costs associated with wood and aluminum windows and how they impact the life cycle assessment of the window systems.

  • Compare how the physical attributes of wood and aluminum windows contribute to the * overall energy efficiency of the building envelope.

  • Use energy modeling to determine the annual energy costs for wood and aluminum window systems in different climatic zones.

Forget chief sustainability officer. The latest job in architecture is director of biomimicry
Let’s talk about elephants for a second. These magnificent mammals have been on this planet for over 55 million years. Many of them live in dry, arid climates, so they’ve learned to stay cool thanks to the fine network of wrinkles on their skin, which helps them trap moisture and stay cool.

What if buildings could do the same?

If your hospital suddenly feels more like an Apple store or greenhouse, biophilic design is why

Among a certain subset of designers, there’s a growing feeling that the more natural a space is, the better. So-called biophilic design, or design that integrates nature and natural processes, is making its way into the world of architecture and urban development. In architecture, biophilia is seen as a way to make people happier and healthier by building nature into their daily lives, even when they’re in a city.

The 10 most innovative architecture firms in 2022

Architects are masters at taking novel ideas and turning them into physical spaces. The firms on this year’s list of the 10 most innovative companies in the architecture industry have pushed the limits of what it means to build. One found ways of applying sustainable design at the scale of a stadium, ensuring that every event under its roof can happen without producing any net carbon dioxide emissions. Another firm developed a method of building floors that slashes excess material use, eliminating most of the concrete and steel that undergird the skyscraping floors of urban high-rises. Another firm is pushing the standard billboard into the realm of technicolor alien spaceships with a bold street-side advertising/art structure right in the heart of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip.

This eye clinic was designed specifically for people with low vision

“We, as a culture, have determined that vision at the level of 20/40 is what we’re going to design to,” Wilson says, of a vision level considered to be slightly worse than the 20/20 average. Though that level works fine for most people, those with vision impairments or vision loss—the exact people coming to an eye clinic—will have a harder time seeing and navigating their way through a space.
