Flexibility the Name of the Game for US Colleges Post-COVID, CO Panelists Say

Technology is playing a central role in infrastructure upgrades to America’s university and college campuses as schools rethink how to maximize space in the age of Zoom.

Panelists at Commercial Observer’s fifth annual “Higher Education Construction Forum“ on March 25 said that the COVID-19 pandemic has only accelerated demand from students and faculty for colleges to invest in the latest innovations when crafting capital projects. The issue has taken on greater importance during the past year with increased virtual learning and work-from-home options spurring more outside-the-box approaches to tackling building usage.

Sea level rise is unstoppable. Cities can adapt, but they need to think bigger

The societal impacts of sea level rise will be immense. The shoreline as we know it will be completely reshaped, inundating parts of 10,000 coastal communities around the globe and rendering millions of homes, buildings, roads, and other infrastructure worthless or unusable. Some coastal cities could see flooding every day by mid century, less than 30 years from now. Low-lying cities like Miami, New Orleans, Copenhagen, and Shanghai could be virtually erased.

The World’s 20 Most Impressive Ancient Builds

Suspension bridges and skyscrapers are marvels of modern engineering, but some of the world's most impressive constructions are thousands of years behind us. The Roman Colosseum is one such wonder of ancient architecture, marking a crucial transition point between two vastly different ages of construction.

For our list of the 20 most impressive ancient achitecture builds (at least ones that are still partially around) we'll use the Great Wall of China as our starting point and dip further back in time to explore the depth and breadth of building before the common era.

Between the trend lines

The Biden administration has come out of the gate strong with a big number to cover an ambitious program. The controversy has been about two things. The first is there is a lot in there not traditionally defined as “infrastructure,” and the second is about how we’ll pay.

But before we talk about that, we have to talk about the plan itself. One, it deals with infrastructure and transportation. This is traditional and central to the entire $2.3 trillion proposal. Two, is broadband and clean water. This is also traditional. Both of these come to about $1 trillion, or less than half the package. Third is jobs, innovation and worker training. This is usually found in jobs or energy packages, rather than an infrastructure package, so it’s less traditional but makes sense within the context of the sweeping plan. Fourth, is in-home health care and extending Medicaid. Again, not very traditional. The fifth is really what architects do: homes and buildings, both new and retrofitted.
