Winners Announced for the 2023 Student Design Competition
Forty-five students from 8 area schools completed the 2023 Student Design Competition for a Dayton Funk Museum.
The Awards Program was held April 22 at the Trotwood Library. Grace Schneider, a junior at Chaminade Julienne High School, was awarded the Top Design Award and a $1,000 L2 Engineering college scholarship. Matthew Mapley, a freshman at Dayton Regional STEM, won the Merit Award and a Sinclair Community College Pathways scholarship, good for one semester of classes. Two Honorable Mention Book Awards of $200 each, were earned by Audrie Sellars, a senior at Bellefontaine High School and Mason Risner, Troy Christian High School.
An award for the Most Creative Use of Materials went to Vandalia Butler High School freshman, Elena George; while Centerville High School sophomore Ian Halferty received the Future Architect Award. Rounding out the prizes and receiving the Master Craftsman award for the best presentation, was Emma Williams, Carroll High School.
This competition was judged on creative design and artistic presentation. Judging of the student’s projects occurred by a panel of jurors prominent in the design field, including: Jordan Reed, Levin Porter Architects; Yasha Ogg, Cannon Design; and David Webb, director of The Funk Center.
Montgomery County Commissioner Carolyn Rice spoke to the students during the April 22 Awards Program. The Student Design program was chaired by Maggie Beecroft, Levin Porter Architects.
