AIA Dayton Student Design Awards Announced

The virtual Awards Ceremony for the 2021 Student Design Competition was held May 1. This year’s competition was 100 percent virtual, with students and volunteers tuning onto Zoom for the charrette and all the design reviews. Fifteen students from eight area high schools signed up for the competition. The pandemic and school closures prevented several area high school classes from undertaking the competition as a class project.

This year’s program was to address food scarcity and the availability of healthy, affordable dining choices within certain areas of our communities. The new Gem City Market and the Salem Avenue Community Garden are both helping to mitigate this food crisis in northwest Dayton. The students’ assignment was to design a farm-to-table restaurant as a free standing building directly adjacent to the new Gem City Market site.

And, here are the winners!

Also to be presented via Zoom
Registration: Coming soon!

Participants to be sent a Zoom invitation on June 7 if attending via Zoom.

Both wood and aluminum windows are being used extensively in today’s commercial and institutional buildings, especially in education, health care, and offices. Using project case studies from across the United States, this program examines how window selection criteria (aesthetics, cost, energy efficiency, and sustainability) impact the design process.

As we look at commercial window applications which include punched openings, storefronts, and curtain walls, architects will learn some of the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of wood or aluminum windows in each application. As we compare aesthetics, cost, energy efficiency, and sustainability; architects will improve their ability to objectively advise their clients on what is the best window solution for their next project.

Approved for 1.0 AIA HSW credit.

China Bans the Construction of 'Ugly' Buildings, Architecture That 'Resembles Genitals'

Recent reform in China has doubled down on strict construction and architecture rules as first demanded by leader Xi Jinping.

Though Jinping's initial complaints about the "weird" buildings began popping up around 2014, according to news.com.au, the construction of "ugly" and "weird" buildings has now officially been put under strict restriction.

The announcement was made by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of China in the "2021 New urbanization and urban-rural integration development key tasks" notice last month. The decree does not clarify what qualifies as "ugly" or "pleasing" to the eye, but does specify that "super high-rise buildings over 500 meters" are prohibited as well.

How a pandemic year of loss reshaped Maya Lin’s art and architecture

For more than a year, I’ve kept a folder on my desk that was stuffed full of scribbled notes for the story I was working on when the pandemic hit. Every journalist, it seems, has a version of this folder — ideas rendered moot by the arrival of our global calamity.

The story, about the architecture of libraries, was also a story about how women design for women. The library in question was one I knew intimately: Neilson Library, the central library at Smith College, the women’s college in Northampton, Mass., where I studied as an undergraduate.

The changes won’t be cheap. According to real estate company JLL’s 2021 U.S. and Canada Office Fit Out Guide, the pandemic is significantly changing the way that offices are laid out and set up, from floorplans to technology to furniture. The construction costs are changing, too.
