Findings from a global study of 5,000 people identify three key insights that are critical for a successful hybrid strategy and return to office. This course will identify what people value more now and how organizations need to change their workplaces to attract people back to the office. The course also explores why the workplace needs to draw inspiration from neighborhoods and how this can impact engagement, productivity, retention and culture.

Small Firm Exchange News

Join Ohio’s Small Firm Exchange (SFx) representative Sarah Kleiner, AIA Cincinnati for a virtual SFx coffee chats where small firm leaders can engage with one another, discuss issues facing small firms today, and see what the AIA can do to support Ohio’s small firms. Virtual chats will take place 8:30-9 a.m. monthly—even months on the third Thursday, odd months on the third Tuesday.

The mission of the Small Firm Exchange (SFx) is to advance the mutual interests of architects practicing in small firms. SFx representatives connect small firm leaders in their local and state components to the national organization. AIA members practicing in small firms are encouraged to reach out to Sarah to discuss how the AIA could better support their practice.

Long-Term Thinking from Design’s Next Generation

More than 400 students from across the United States and Canada applied to Metropolis’s 2023 Future100 program, hoping to be selected as the best talents graduating in North America this year. SANDOW Design Group EVP and Design Futurist AJ Paron and I had our work cut out for us in determining the final list, and then the Metropolis editorial team had an equally big challenge parsing the portfolios for trends and patterns that might tell us something about the mindset that this generation is bringing to the A&D professions.

To Address Climate Change, Architects Must Tackle Decarbonization

Carbon is a different story. To date, we have been measuring building performance, which has given us an understanding of operational carbon emissions. But to have a full picture of the carbon footprint of a building, we need to measure embodied carbon, which are the emissions associated with the extraction, manufacturing, and transport of building materials. While building performance metrics are contained and easy for designers to influence, embodied carbon is diffuse, coming from many sources throughout the building lifecycle. It’s hard to measure, and its calculation is dependent on more stakeholders. This means that if the industry is going to master carbon, we’ve got to work differently and update our definition of sustainable design.

An Architect-Developer’s Journey, in 6 Buildings

Developers sometimes commission great architects — but not usually. Aesthetic quality just usually isn’t their first aim, unless that developer happens to be an architect, and the person they’re hiring is, well, themselves.

Architect-developers are a somewhat rare breed; well-known examples include John Portman, famed for his signature atrium hotels, and Charles Luckman, who designed Madison Square Garden and Boston’s Prudential Tower. Another example is Cary Tamarkin, the 65-year-old architect responsible for a number of unusual and very good buildings in New York City.

These floating triangle buildings could be the future of coastal cities

The structures are the work of Kunlé Adeyemi’s Amsterdam-based architecture firm NLÉ, which is behind a new exhibition at the museum exploring what he calls Water Cities. A Nigerian architect and designer, Adeyemi gained fame for designing a floating structure for an informal community in Lagos. With coastal communities around the world facing increasing risks from climate change, his design approach has grown into a kind of manifesto for how buildings and cities should be redesigned to accommodate more water underfoot.

Architecture after COVID: how the pandemic inspired building designers

Walking during lockdowns, following protocols and restrictions, city dwellers witnessed the birth of a new architectural aesthetic.

Concern with infection began gradually redefining the space of cities and the social choreography of daily urban life. This has led to a radical rethinking of the limits of architecture. I explored these changes in my new book, Architecture After COVID.
