 Early Professional Friendly Firms!

Earlier this year, AIA Ohio announced the newly created Early Professional Friendly Firm Program. The goal of this program is to celebrate firms who offer exceptional support and opportunities for their early professionals. Additionally, the program seeks to foster a dialogue within firms across the state with the objective of creating new policies and practices that promote innovation, development, and progressive workplaces for the future members of the design profession.

An early professional is defined as someone who is part of the architectural staff and fills one of the following roles: architectural students, recent graduates, unlicensed emerging professionals within 10 years of graduation, or architects licensed within the last 10 years.

This year, there were two designations possible for a firm to receive. The Early Professional Firm Friendly Designation and the Early Professional Firm Friendly Plus+ Designation.

EP Firm Friendly Designation is earned by receiving a passing score of 70% (55 points) or above on the EP Firm Friendly questionnaire.

EP Firm Friendly Plus+ Designation is earned by receiving a score of 80% (63 points) or above.

AIA Ohio is pleased to announce that the following firms have earned the Early Professional Friendly Firm Plus+ Designation: Listed first below are the three firms receiving the top three scores, who are deserving of special recognition:

A legal battle between Marlon Blackwell Architects and HBG Design will have lasting implications for architectural practice
An intellectual property (IP) dispute over the design of the Saracen Casino Resort in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, settled this past January, might easily have been a subplot in Netflix’s Ozark, as the case has all the twists and turns of a rustic neo-noir tale.

How to fireproof a house

By 2030, climate change will make one in 25 Australian homes “uninsurable” if greenhouse gas emissions continue unabated, with riverine flooding posing the greatest insurance risk, a new Climate Council analysis finds.

As a professor of architecture, I find this analysis grim, yet unsurprising. One reason is because Australian housing is largely unfit for the challenges of climate change.

Architects earn more from renovations than new builds for first time, fueled by workplace revolution

Architecture firms are billing more from reconstruction and renovation projects than they are from new builds for the first time; a milestone driven by soaring demand for office renovations. In the 20 years that the AIA has been collecting data on billings for renovations versus new build projects, the share of billings received from renovations has been consistently rising for over a decade, suggesting the new milestone is not entirely attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic.

When thinking about green energy and new construction, build smarter

From solar solutions to rainwater reclamation, of the many advancements in green energy that’ve been made over the past few decades, city and county administrators should take particular note of those made in the building construction sector.

In 2018, for example, a little more than $300 billion in public dollars was spent on new construction, according to Statista. Especially now, with trillions in the federal pipeline slated for public infrastructure projects, consideration of green design practices is paramount for the environment and because it’s the fiscally responsible thing to do.

‘Onslaught’ Of Office Renovations Taking Place As Companies Redesign Spaces For Hybrid Work

A magnitudinous confluence of the corporate return-to-work push, supply chain issues that appear to be worsening, rising interest rates and the realization that office space needs to be recently built or updated to be competitive is fueling a historic surge in renovations.
In recent months, for the first time ever, architectural firms are making more income from renovation work than new construction, said American Institute of Architects Chief Economist Kermit Baker, who expects the run on retrofitting to be more than a late pandemic blip.
