Timber Frame with SIP Panel Construction Site Visit

Date: Wednesday July 12, 2023

Time: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM - Lunch provided

Location: Between Lebanon and Waynesville (Address provided after registration)

Cost: Varies based on membership type (Full-time students Free)

Timber Frame construction utilizes heavy timbers with interlocking wood-to-wood, mortise and tenon joinery and fasteners rather than nails, screws, or metalwork. Increasingly, wood is viewed as a sustainable, environmental resource with a carbon footprint that’s 75% less than that of concrete or steel, in addition to the embodied carbon sequestered in the frame for the duration of building use.

Structural Insulated Panels (SIP) are better for the environment. Assembled off-site, they reduce waste. Once installed they provide a high performing weather-tight shell that reduces energy costs. They also can save 50% on framing labor by reducing framing time by 66% on average! SIP can be used on residential or commercial structures for walls, roofing, and foundations.

Join Pinnacle Engineering and Colorado Timberframing for this site visit and enjoy an early lunch.

Presented by AIA Cincinnati Custom Residential Architects Network (CRAN).

Sustainable Design of the Future Is Hiding in the Past

“Currently architecture is being somewhat lazy and letting engineers solve the problems,” exhibition co-curator and architect Jure Grohar told CityLab. “We’re building homes the way we did 50 years ago and just adding technological layers on top to be efficient. We have nothing against technology, the question is how to integrate it, how to act as architects rather than just borrowing from other professions as if ecology is just an afterthought.”

San Francisco's Architecture Shines During 2023 Edition of Annual AIA Conference

San Francisco rolled out the proverbial red carpet (with just a hint of fog) last week from June 7 through 10 as host city of the 2023 edition of the American Institute of Architects’ largest annual gathering, the Conference on Architecture. Per AIA estimates, A’23 was attended by more than 15,000 people.

Located in the SoMa neighborhood, the sprawling Moscone Center served as the central venue for A’23, with celebratory parties, walking tours, open studios, and other related goings-on taking place across town. The slickly produced event marked the first time that the conference had been held in San Francisco in more than a decade, a period in which the progressive, perpetually in-flux city has experienced headline-grabbing ups and downs.

Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum Bilbao recognized with AIA Twenty-Five Year Award

Gehry Partners’ transcendent Guggenheim Museum Bilbao design has been named the winner of the prestigious American Institute of Architects Twenty-five Year Award in honor of its unprecedented economic impact and lasting architectural legacy as one of the most storied and influential contemporary cultural buildings in the Western world.

Finally completed after a somewhat remarkable construction phase that lasted seven total years, the museum opened in October of 1997 to considerable acclaim internationally while garnering recognition from much of the critical community who heralded its arrival as a "signal moment" in the history of design.

The 8 Best New Design, Architecture, and Urbanism Books Out This Summer

There happen to be a lot of really good design books that either just hit or are about to hit bookstores. It’s ideal for summer when we’re more inclined to read for pure pleasure. While only one of the following could conceivably be a beach read (designer Misha Kahn’s first book), the rest are page-turners in their own right. Below are eight of our favorite new releases, including a deep dive into Isamu Noguchi’s lifelong affair with Greece and the first monograph on Nicola L.’s feminist furniture.

AIA23: Global Insights on Tech for Architects

The AIA National Convention in San Francisco took place last week, and Architosh made its rounds with a multitude of technology exhibitors (all software) inside and outside the official Technology Pavilion.

Two important themes loomed large at the show this year. The first and biggest was the prospect of AI (artificial intelligence) entering the industry’s leading software tools. The second minor theme was Apple’s recently announced Vision Pro mixed-reality headset.
