AIA Dayton Delegates to AIA National Do Their Homework

The AIA Dayton Board named President Dan Wyckoff, AIA and Secretary Bryan Greene, AIA as Delegates to the AIA Annual Membership Meeting that was held June 9. In addition to attending the virtual Annual Meeting, both attended the virtual Ohio Caucus on June 10, and then voted online the following week for AIA 2024 President, 2023-24 Secretary and 2023-24 At-large Director.

To prepare for their role as Delegate, the AIA Dayton Board had a Zoom conference call to discuss the candidates for election and the issues and resolutions that would come before the Delegates. Each AIA Dayton Board member listened to the candidates speeches and researched the issues before recording their opinions in a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet was referenced for discussion at the Board meeting on June 8 and a consensus was reached.

The AIA Dayton selections turned out to be the winning candidates. Kimberly Dowdell was elected AIA’s 2024 President; Britt Lindberg, FAIA, was elected as 2023-24 Secretary, and Illya Azaroff, FAIA, was voted in as 2023-24 At-large Director.

All three proposed bylaws amendments were also passed by the Delegates. For more information, visit the AIA website here.

Metal mesh screens reduce solar gain on Spain's largest wood-framed residential building

Peris+Toral Arquitectes’s 85 Social Dwellings in Cornellà is Spain’s largest wood-structure residential building. Its facade of metal-screened terraces lifts off the ground, suspended by a series of columns. The Spanish firm won the project through a 2017 competition organized by the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona and supported by El Instituto Metropolitano de Promoción de Suelo y Gestión Patrimonial (The Metropolitan Institute for the Land Promotion and Heritage Management). Aware of the effort's tight budget, Peris+Toral sought a design that maximized apartment sizes while remaining cost sensitive.

AIA Dayton Student Design Program Spotlight

Alexandra Bohler, a native Daytonian and 2001 graduate of Stivers School for the Arts, is an AIA member with Hatch Architecture in Dayton and has participated in the AIA’s annual student program for seven years.

“Each year, the committee chooses a different project, based on something going on in the community,” she said. “Last year, although we had to work virtually, it was a design for a restaurant in the empty lot next door to the Gem City Market on Salem Avenue, which the market’s co-op owns.

“This year’s project was to create a welcome center to the Westside Makerspace in one of the Wright brothers’ hangars by the new West Library branch on Abbey Avenue.”
