Small Firm Exchange News

Join Ohio’s Small Firm Exchange (SFx) representative Sarah Kleiner, AIA Cincinnati for a virtual SFx coffee chats where small firm leaders can engage with one another, discuss issues facing small firms today, and see what the AIA can do to support Ohio’s small firms. Virtual chats will take place 8:30-9 a.m. monthly—even months on the third Thursday, odd months on the third Tuesday.

The mission of the Small Firm Exchange (SFx) is to advance the mutual interests of architects practicing in small firms. SFx representatives connect small firm leaders in their local and state components to the national organization. AIA members practicing in small firms are encouraged to reach out to Sarah to discuss how the AIA could better support their practice.

A building collapse in Davenport, Iowa, leaves residents looking for answers

Late in the afternoon on May 28, a portion of the back of the building, facing a parking lot, gave out. A section of the scarlet-painted brick wall could be seen collapsed, leaving a gaping hole into the interior of the building. The following morning, the fire department moved to a recovery operation rather than an active search operation, at which time the Davenport Development and Neighborhood Services Department took oversight of the building. It was also then that the city announced that the remainder of the structure would be demolished the following day, May 30. Search and rescue teams swept the site, declaring that no signs of life were present.

Termite mounds may one day inspire ‘living, breathing’ architecture

Termites are responsible for building the tallest biological structures in the world, with the biggest mound ever recorded measuring an astounding 42-feet-high. These insects aren’t randomly building out their homes, however—in fact, the structures are meticulously designed to make the most of the environment around them. Termite mounds in Namibia, for example, rely on intricate, interconnected tunnels known as an “egress complex.” As explained in Frontiers’ announcement, these mounds’ complexes grow northward during the November-to-April rainy season in order to be directly exposed to the midday sun. Throughout the rest of the year, however, termites block these egress tunnels, thus regulating ventilation and moisture levels depending on the season..

Ireland’s New Rugby Museum Scores Win for Georgian Architecture Fans

In Newtown Pery, to the east of the River Shannon in Limerick, Ireland, elegant rowhouses line a route from the center of town to the busy People’s Park. The construction of these evenly spaced blocks of homes in the late 18th and early 19th centuries marked a turning point in the history of Ireland’s third-largest urban settlement. This was once a walled medieval town, but by the early 1800s, it had transformed into a hub of trade and commerce.

The homes are characterized by near-identical facades and rich, red bricks. Today, these features have become synonymous with the city and with an Irish branch of neoclassical architecture known as the Georgian style.

Travis Scott Plans To Study Architecture At Harvard Once He Retires From Rap

Architecture is my true passion,” $cott said. “I plan to apply to the architecture program at Harvard GSD when I’m done with music, which won’t be for a while. It would be dope to do both at the same time.”

The 32-year-old actually guest lectured at the Ivy League, where he gave a master class to 500 students on Creativity. At the time, the organization No Label stated, “We wanted our attendees to engage with a creative who defies the labels placed upon them and could speak to the journey of staying true to one’s vision. With his creation of ASTROWORLD, Travis Scott has done just that.”

A stadium designed in study hall: Depew Middle School 'architects' meet the real-life Buffalo Bills designers

Lucas Spruch and his friend Noah Ducato, both eighth graders, finished a bridge-design project over the winter. With a bit of free time to explore, they discovered that Minecraft Education software was installed on the computers in the Depew Middle School lab. Lucas asked his teacher, Aaron Nolan, if he could use the software, which allows multiple users to build in the same virtual world.

“Sure, if you are doing something productive,” said Nolan, who had a suggestion: The Buffalo Bills had recently unveiled the first two renderings of the team’s future stadium, which will be built across the road from Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park. Why not use Minecraft to build out your own version of the stadium?
