Timber Frame with SIP Panel Construction Site Visit

Date: Wednesday July 12, 2023

Time: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM - Lunch provided

Location: Between Lebanon and Waynesville (Address provided after registration)

Cost: Varies based on membership type (Full-time students Free)

Timber Frame construction utilizes heavy timbers with interlocking wood-to-wood, mortise and tenon joinery and fasteners rather than nails, screws, or metalwork. Increasingly, wood is viewed as a sustainable, environmental resource with a carbon footprint that’s 75% less than that of concrete or steel, in addition to the embodied carbon sequestered in the frame for the duration of building use.

Structural Insulated Panels (SIP) are better for the environment. Assembled off-site, they reduce waste. Once installed they provide a high performing weather-tight shell that reduces energy costs. They also can save 50% on framing labor by reducing framing time by 66% on average! SIP can be used on residential or commercial structures for walls, roofing, and foundations.

Join Pinnacle Engineering and Colorado Timberframing for this site visit and enjoy an early lunch.

Presented by AIA Cincinnati Custom Residential Architects Network (CRAN).

Small Firm Exchange News

Join Ohio’s Small Firm Exchange (SFx) representative Sarah Kleiner, AIA Cincinnati for a virtual SFx coffee chats where small firm leaders can engage with one another, discuss issues facing small firms today, and see what the AIA can do to support Ohio’s small firms. 100 years of Le Corbusier: what does he mean to today’s architects?

Le Corbusier was to architecture what Picasso was to painting, a towering and egomaniacal creative force who transformed his discipline for ever. His buildings have inspired admiration, sometimes devotion. He is an icon, granted the nickname “Corb” or “Corbu” by architects. He has also been vigorously attacked, as a mechanistic fanatic whose ideas inspired inhumane tower blocks and concrete jungles.

How to design the perfect city playground

If play is the work of childhood, a growing chorus of researchers and designers say it’s imperative to create more spaces that offer the chance to experiment, take risks and face challenges.

“Play is the way that you learn,” said Matthew Urbanski, partner with landscape architects Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, which has created some of the most creative parks in cities across North America.

In downtown Chicago, office conversions are being used to create affordable housing

As COVID-19 and remote work have emptied downtown office buildings, converting the most beleaguered, and often oldest, of these into residences has emerged as a seemingly intuitive solution that in reality is often filled with complex trade-offs involving floor plate depth and code calculations that will require the reformatting of yesterday’s comparatively primitive office towers for today’s heavily amenitized urban residences. This transition is being harnessed as a subsidized housing development tool, making the city a leader, according to Roubik.

Architects’ Billings Rise for First Time Since September, Buoyed by Institutions

U.S. architecture firms offered a small sign of hope for the economy as they billed clients for more work in May in the first monthly increase since last year, buoyed by institutional projects.

The billings score of invoices from architects and designers rose to 51 in May from 48.5 in April in its first gain since September 2022, according to the monthly index from the American Institute of Architects and its partner firm, Deltek. A score higher than 50 equates to more monthly billings in the index, a closely watched indicator of nonresidential construction.
