Welcome New Board Member!

Bayleigh Hetrick, Assoc. AIA, has joined the AIA Dayton Board of Directors as Associate Director. She is currently working for RDA Group Architects in Centerville as a designer, working on residential projects and renovations while assisting with other projects in the office.

Bayleigh graduated from the newly accredited Architecture program at Bowling Green State University in March 2020 with a Master of Architecture degree. While at BGSU as a graduate assistant, she worked to develop a new training system and manual for the architectural design shop, as well as conducting research for many faculty members.

While completing her B.S. in Architecture, Bayleigh participated in the Adaptive Reuse architecture competition for the AIA Ohio Valley Convention in Indianapolis. At the end of her bachelor’s, she was awarded the honorable mention for her presentation and design of the architectural senior capstone project.

Her primary research and design interests focus on the civic spaces within architecture and the issues of feminism in the profession. Welcome Bayleigh!

AIA Dayton Annual Golf Outing - POSTPONED

This week a difficult decision was made to postpone the 2021 Annual Golf Outing at Meadowbrook Golf Club for July 19.  There were many factors involved, but bottom line is we don’t want to hold a golf outing that is not successful for both golfers and vendors.

In the next few weeks you will receive a short survey from us, which we hope you will take the time to respond to. Once we receive your feedback, we will reschedule an outing for early Fall.

Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to getting back together with you in person at a fun, relaxing event that we can all enjoy!

If you have any questions, please contact us at 937-291-1913.

A’21 brings together leaders in architecture and beyond for a four-day, immersive digital experience that defines the year ahead. It’s the architecture and design event of the year! Halfway through the ambitious four-day schedule of over 50 sessions, the remaining sessions are July 29 and August 19.

On July 29, the theme is Community Engagement. Communities prosper when architects are involved, but barrier remain to individual agency and action. The July 29 program focuses on helping you become an agent of change.

Gabriella Gómez-Mont is transforming Mexico City into a nexus for the kind of architecture cities demand. Her newest project, Experimentalista, will debut in Amsterdam, London, and Mexico City this summer. Don’t miss Gabriella’s take on what architects need to understand to design creative solutions.

Keynote host is Roman Mars, the host and creator of 99% Invisible, one of the world’s most popular podcasts about architecture and design. He’s back at A’21 to host several keynote events and introduce the topics and big ideas our remarkable speakers will share with you.

The theme for August 19 is Building Efficiencies. Climate change highlights the need for drastically reducing our carbon emissions. The August 19 program showcases innovations that are changing firms’ work and the AEC industry. Closing keynote speaker on August 19 is Venus Williams. Architecture Career Guide: How Much Money Do Architects Really Make?

This misconception may translate into the way that architects may think about their salaries. In addition to the range of job positions that exist within various firms, educational credentials, licensing, work experience, location and firm revenue are all factors that contribute to variations in salaries across the profession.

Tour the Highlights of the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale

For the last 40 years, the Venice Biennale of Architecture has produced a mixture of futuristic design, compelling propositions for environmental and technological innovations, and a healthy dose of inscrutable theoretical technobabble.

This year’s Biennale, which was supposed to take place last year but was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic, is titled, presciently, “How Will We Live Together?” It includes submissions from 61 countries that are primarily shown in national pavilions in the city’s Giardini, a park on the southern side of Venice’s Castello district.

Report Card: How Are Firms Grappling with Racial Justice?

The conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on April 20 for the murder of George Floyd is an opportunity to reflect on changes made in the profession since last summer’s wake-up call. “The senseless death of George Floyd last year and the racial awakening that followed has served as a pivotal moment for how we address diversity and inclusion efforts across multiple industries,” says Jason Pugh, senior associate at Gensler and president of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA). “It was amazing to see how it impacted everyone in the architecture and design community, which has notoriously carried the stigma of being a white, male-dominated profession.”

How to turn a building into a giant battery

The building you live in, the bridges you cross, and the sidewalks you traverse could one day store electricity.

Architects Use Drones to Digitally Map Historic Bridge

William Krueger said it is important to have a digital record of the Cobban Bridge, so it can be preserved forever.

Krueger, an instructor at the UW-Milwaukee School of Architecture & Urban Planning, used a drone on Tuesday to map out every fine detail of the century-old bridge, located halfway between Jim Falls and Cornell. It is slated to be torn down next year.

Krueger said he took about 30 scans of the bridge from all sides, using the drone to take footage from a sky view as well as underneath.
