Date: Tuesday, September 19

Time: 4:00 PM

Location: 721 Miami Chapel Road, Dayton (Meet in the Main Lobby)

Fee: $5 for AIA Members; $10 for Nonmembers

Five Rivers Health Center is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), committed to increasing access to quality, comprehensive care to all patients including low-income and uninsured. Since it’s opening in 2022, the Edgemont Campus is the largest FQHC site in Ohio.

Services housed within the new facility include women’s health, pediatrics, dental, internal medicine, pharmacy, sports medicine, behavioral health, acupuncture, massage therapy, addiction medicine, nutritional services, transportation, administration, and billing. Through input from the community, staff and patients, the Edgemont Campus has 88 exam and procedure rooms, drive-through pharmacy, community space, and on-site laboratory and x-ray. Care is provided by Physicians and Certified Nurse Practitioners from Wright State Physicians Inc. and FRHC Physicians and Physician Assistants. FRHC provides an exceptional learning environment for more than 100 Wright State Boonshoft School of Medicine residents and fellows.

The challenge during the planning stage was consolidation of multiple locations into this one larger, multipurpose building. The new 84,000 SF medical office building provides for a better “one stop shop” experience for the patient, allows providers to be utilized in more than one capacity efficiently, and creates a unique and inviting space for the patients.

To Code or Not to Code

Building energy codes and ESG (environmental, social, and governance) policies are the problem and deregulation is the solution. This is what National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Chairwoman Alicia Huey would have us believe, as evidenced by her organization’s recent statement to Congress, in which Huey laments, in part, the “costly” and “restrictive” nature of grants made through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) that incentivize the adoption of more progressive energy codes.

Thinking beyond AC: 7 ways architects are redesigning buildings for extreme heat

As heat waves get hotter, longer, and much more frequent, better air-conditioning alone isn’t enough to keep occupants comfortable—we also need to redesign buildings to help them stay cooler, and avoid millions of ACs straining the grid so much that the power goes out. Designs that have been proven in the Southwest in cities like Phoenix may also now make sense in the Northwest in cities like Portland, Oregon. Here are seven strategies that architects are using.

Infrastructure holds top spot among US mayors’ priorities: NLC report

Infrastructure is the top priority of U.S. mayors for the third year in a row, according to the 2023 State of the Cities report, released in July by the National League of Cities.

After infrastructure, mayors are most focused on city budgets and public safety, the annual report says in its 10th iteration.

NLC bases the report on analysis of 37 speeches by mayors across the U.S. For the first time this year, the report also looked at U.S. Census and other data on which issues are most important to residents, said Farhad Omeyr, report co-author and program director of the NLC’s Center for Research and Data. “Looking at citizen sentiments, we realized that public safety is the major issue that they request from their governments,” he said.

Nearly $1 billion earmarked for energy efficiency upgrades to federal buildings

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) recently announced plans to use $975 million in Inflation Reduction Act funding for energy efficiency and clean energy upgrades to federal buildings across the country.

The investment will impact about 40 million sf, or about 20% of GSA’s federal buildings portfolio. It will expand the agency’s sustainable building portfolio to 134 million sf. The projects will enable 28 buildings to achieve net zero emissions, and 100 more buildings to become all-electric. GSA currently has about 200 buildings that are all-electric.
