News Brief 9-18-20
President's Message
AIA Dayton is able to pursue our mission and serve our community through the generous support of our annual chapter sponsors, many of whom have been loyal colleagues and friends for decades. During a typical year we would thank our sponsors at a picnic dinner generously hosted by Siebenthalers. For me, that evening is one of the highlights of AIA’s year, reconnecting with friends and meeting our newest sponsors.

In this very atypical year, we decided to thank our sponsors from a safe distance, delivering Siebenthaler mums and thank you cards. During this extraordinary time, we all faced a variety of challenges, and we have done what our industry does best – designed a solution, found the right materials, and counted on our trusted partners to build our future.

Through their continued support our sponsors acknowledge the importance of AIA Dayton’s work. The next time you work with one of our sponsors, please join me in thanking them for their generosity.   - Charlie Setterfield, AIA

For 'Ike,' A Monument Unlike Any Other: Eisenhower Memorial Is Dedicated In D.C.

Dwight David Eisenhower was one of the towering figures of the 20th century: A five-star general, he led the D-Day invasion and helped defeat the Nazis. A two-term president, he brought stability to postwar America.

Since his death in 1969, memories of the man called Ike have faded. But this week, the dedication of an Eisenhower Memorial in Washington, D.C., will bring him vividly back to mind.

This memorial is not like any other presidential monument in Washington. No sky-piercing white obelisk (George Washington), no massive, looming statue (Abraham Lincoln.)

A New Gold Standard for Green Architecture

In 1981, architects Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk broke ground on the vacation town of Seaside, Fla. Seaside was a planned community designed to cut through the (then-literal) smog of America’s car dependency. To make driving both unnecessary and undesirable, the husband-and-wife team narrowed streets while widening footpaths — and laid out Seaside’s grid so that stores and community buildings were just a few minutes away from any home on foot.

Just as cannily, Duany and Plater-Zyberk cloaked their eco-conscious strategies in the aesthetic veneer of Main Street Americana, the better to appeal to buyers who had yet to absorb scientists’ growing concerns about fossil fuel use. The result was an influential hit, both locally and on the global stage: In 1998, Seaside’s Rockwellian cheerfulness was the backdrop for the Jim Carrey movie “The Truman Show.”

Architect's innovative shipping container homes could help solve Puerto Rico's housing crisis

Gautier Castro first saw container home structures while visiting Europe and the mainland US as an architectural student.

The containers, she explains, are already built "to withstand the most adverse weather conditions."

"I realized that if we could make an entire home -- a basic home that could cover all your needs with this structure -- it meant that we can do it a lot quicker and a lot cheaper because we're substituting the columns, beams, walls with just one piece," she says.

Whatever Happened To … The Instant Hospitals Built For COVID-19 Patients In Wuhan?

In February, China pulled off an impressive construction feat that caught the world’s attention: Amid surging cases of COVID-19, China built two hospitals in the pandemic’s epicenter, Wuhan, in under two weeks to isolate and treat COVID-19 patients. Consisting largely of prefabricated rooms and components, the two-story structures were dubbed “instant hospitals.” NPR reported on the facilities just as the first one opened. But now the virus is under control in Wuhan, and life has more or less returned to normal. So, what happened to these “instant hospitals?”
