1510 Webster Design Tour

Located in the heart of downtown Oakland, 1510 Webster will be one of the largest mass timber towers in the world. The project will reactivate the streetscape with retail at the ground floor, pay homage to its neighboring structures with a low-rise podium, and provide 222 one & two bedroom units in an 18-story tower. Ground floor retail & commercial spaces will revitalize a currently vacant street corner and a covered public plaza filled with public art and greenery will create a place for gathering.

Designing Low Slope Roof Drainage for Climate Change/ Severe Rain Events (1.5 LU|HSW)

Roof drainage systems for low slope buildings have based their design requirements on a “60-minutes, 100-year storm”. Code requirements for sizing roof drainage do not plan on severe rainstorms / climate change. This presentation will focus on why designers and contractors may be contributing to a potential roof collapse and solutions for improving roof drainage.

Energy Decarbonization Blueprint (1 LU|ZNCD)

Utilizing four case studies, this course explores how to create a new blueprint for energy decarbonization that aligns with the changing electric grid. An overview of energy infrastructure changes that are taking place in the state of California will be provided alongside how these changes impact the types of building systems being considered for a multi-family building, a school, a healthcare project, and an office building. The course will explore the carbon impacts of each case study, both today and in the future as the electric grid continues to decarbonize utilizing expected average carbon emissions for 2030 and 2050.

Grid-Adaptive Microgrids: The Future of Energy Decarbonization and Resiliency (1.5 LU|ZNCD)

As the building industry shifts focus from the metric of energy to the metric of greenhouse gas emissions, the relationship between buildings and their energy utilities is changing. This session will look at pathways for building decarbonization and the potential for grid-interactive buildings to lower emissions quickly and enable a faster transition to a decarbonized grid and localized energy resiliency in the future. Through case studies of successful microgrids, these projects demonstrate how we can meet climate goals, ensure resiliency, and advance the industry as a whole.

ABI April 2023: Business conditions soften again at architecture firms

Business conditions softened at architecture firms in April, as the AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score fell back below 50 (an ABI score below 50 indicates in a decline in firm billings). Excluding the slight growth seen in March, billings at architecture firms have declined every month since last October.
