After a long and (sometimes) lonely lockdown, we are thrilled to announce that our 2022 Home Tours will be IN PERSON!

Do you have a finished project in Napa county that you are eager to show off? Let us feature it in our first physical Home Tours since 2019! Our 2022 Home Tours will be held around the first week of June. If you are interested in us showcasing a finished home of yours, please email Mike Wilson at hometours@aiaeb.org.
Letter From AIA East Bay President Brian Stryzek
I am honored to be serving as the 2022 AIA East Bay Board President and humbled by the long list of talented architects who I follow. I have watched the past three presidents and staff effortlessly deal with the challenges of chapter and society. This year is an exciting one for our chapter, and I am very glad to be president now.

It was our first in-person, public lecture in two years, and we glad we were able to share it with many of our members. California legislators passed the California Housing Opportunity and More Efficiency (HOME) Act, commonly known as Senate Bill 9 (SB 9), to address the ongoing housing crisis. Come explore how SB 9 is being implemented at the local level and how the recent slate of Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) laws work with SB 9. There will be an analysis on the best and worse cities when it comes to SB 9 implementation. This event will involve a quick presentation and a lengthy Q&A with the audience.

IMPORTANT REMINDER! Architects, It’s Time to File a New Business Entity Report Form (BERF)

If you are currently providing professional services in California, you must have a BERF on file with the California Architects Board. And, since the BERF form was updated in 2021, architects need to update their BERF and fill out TWO notices: one to disassociate, and one to associate.

Financial Incentives Available for Energy Efficient New Construction and Major Alterations

New construction in the East Bay area continues to boom. This provides a unique opportunity to advance the state's carbon reduction goals and provide long term energy savings that also creates healthy, comfortable buildings. AIA East Bay members can now take advantage of the California Energy Design Assistance (CEDA) program for new construction and major alterations throughout the state of California to learn which measures will benefit their project the most.

With this article I want to explore the question, “Which building code applies to an ADU?” Should the California Residential Code (CRC) or the California Building Code (CBC) be applied to ADUs?

Call for Early Stage Real Estate Development Projects

A call for projects is open for a pilot effort funded through the American Institute of Architects Upjohn Research Initiative. The goal of the pilot is to identify new approaches to streamlining the real estate development process by centering community goals for climate, health, and equity. Its results will be compiled into a framework report with nationwide relevance. The deadline for submitting an initial statement of interest is March 21.

ABI January 2022: Entering 2022, architecture firms continue to see steady growth

Business conditions at architecture firms entering 2022 were essentially the same as when they ended 2021, with an Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score of 51.0 in January, the same as the revised December score (any score over 50 indicates billings growth). This makes 12 straight months of positive readings for the ABI. However, over this period the pace of growth of the ABI has clearly moderated.
