The AIA East Bay holds annual elections for open seats on our Board of Directors. This year we have six open Board seats. Board members hold their positions for a 2-year term. Board candidates are asked to submit their application which includes a statement of interest, and their experience with AIA East Bay, as a volunteer, committee member, or event attendee. It’s important to demonstrate how your background and involvement in our Community and the East Bay AEC Industry will benefit our organization and our membership.

Regional & Urban Design Community (RUDC) Symposium 2023
Convening in Washington, DC, the symposium’s first day will expand on this ambition and explore the following themes through various fast-paced presentations and panel discussions. The conversation will continue the symposium’s second day through a series of on-site project tours and workshops throughout the Washington DC region.

Reducing Whole Life Carbon From Buildings - How and Why (1.5 LU|ZNCD)
This session will focus on tools, strategies, and workflows for reducing carbon emissions from buildings. Jack Rusk, Climate Strategist at EHDD, will highlight free and easy-to-use tools currently available for estimating carbon emissions at all stages of design. The focus of the session will be on early project phases, where smart planning decisions can lead to major carbon reductions.

Michelle Obama School Design Tour
Building an equitable new school that could give students agency in their education and help parents advance critical skills became the driving force in the design process. Built on the site of the previous school, the new Michelle Obama School was designed to be a full-service community school that builds on the legacy of its namesake to empower students as active participants in their own learning.

Whole Life Carbon – A Window Into The Full Impacts of Projects (1.5 LU|ZNCD)
The building industry need to decarbonize all aspects of building performance to help achieve global climate commitments. In order to do this projects need to look beyond just operational or embodied carbon to whole life carbon. By looking at whole life carbon, projects can understand the full impacts of design options and make decisions to drastically reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions.

As-Built Surveying Best Practices (1.5 LU)
As-Built Surveying Best Practices Part 2 is a comprehensive course that was developed in response to architects’ direct need to obtain as-built plans prior to beginning their design process. The class is intended to educate the attendee about both parts of the as-built survey process – gathering the field measurements of the structure, as well as using the data collected to draft or model the final plans needed by the architect.

If they were going to hang onto their century-old Craftsman-inspired residence in the Berkeley Hills, it would need to better accommodate Fran, whose multiple sclerosis was severely limiting her mobility.

ABI August 2023: Business conditions soften at architecture firms
Business conditions at architecture firms softened modestly in August, with the AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score falling below 50 to 48.1. This marks the eleventh consecutive month where billings have been essentially flat at architecture firms, following a period of strong growth in much of 2021 and 2022.
