2022 AIA Indiana Convention - Celebrate Good Times - Join AIA Indiana members, sponsors, and friends on Friday, October 21, for the 2022 AIA Indiana Convention as we celebrate good times! This one-day event is being hosted by the Indiana University J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program in the newly outfitted Republic Building. The convention will feature a keynote address by Julie Snow, FAIA, Snow Kreilich Architects. AIA Fort Wayne September Program presented by International Masonry Institute (IMI) - Hands-On Masonry Basics - This program, which is scheduled for Tuesday, September 27, 4:30 p.m., at the BAC Local 4 IN/KY Fort Wayne Chapter, 7301 Decatur Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46816, will provide architects and other design and construction related professionals with an enhanced ability to design/analyze the constructability of a typical masonry wall by observing proper installation techniques adjacent to common mistakes/code violations. A station will allow for designers to physically apply mortar to bricks and build a wall with the help of masons to further develop their understanding of the skill and craft involved. 2022 AIA FORT WAYNE DESIGN AWARDS – Call for Entries - All AIA Fort Wayne member architects in good standing who have led the design of completed projects inside or outside of Indiana are invited to compete for Honor, Merit, and Citation Design Awards. AIA Indiana State Disaster Assistance Program/I-BEAM – The AIA Indiana State Disaster Assistance Program is run through the Indiana Building Emergency Assessment and Monitoring Team (I-BEAM). Steve Alspaugh, AIA, as seen on the left in the photo, serves as the AIA Indiana State Disaster Assistance Coordinator and recently completed "On-Site Leader Training For Post-Disaster Building Safety Evaluation Teams" with I-BEAM team members. The I-BEAM team consists of trained and qualified volunteer engineers, architects and other qualified personnel. This volunteer program enables these members of the community to offer their time and talents to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) in the assessment of the safety for use or if entry should be restricted of buildings deemed to be essential facilities following a natural or man-made disaster. LEED Lab Manual Review - As a LEED AP, member of USGBC Indiana and professor of architecture at Ball State University, Robert Koester, AIA is committed to sustainability education. Ball State in Muncie, Indiana, was one of the first three universities across the U.S. to use the LEED Lab program, and in 2019, a student group was the first in the region to certify a building under LEED for Operations and Maintenance. LEED Lab was founded in 2013 by former USGBC director Jaime Von Mourik, working with Patricia Andrasik, LEED AP and assistant professor and head of sustainability outreach at the School of Architecture and Planning at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. In 2021, Andrasik published "LEED Lab: A Model for Sustainability Design Education," about the program, including theory, tasks, tools and techniques necessary for credit achievement, along with case studies and exercises in each chapter. Koester has reviewed the manual for those who may be interested in bringing LEED Lab to their own school. CLICK HERE to learn more.

Indiana Architectural Foundation - In honor of the late John G. Pecsok, FAIA, a legacy gift to the Indiana Architectural Foundation from his estate was made in his name. Establishing a memorial or tribute gift to the IAF is a meaningful way to honor someone special while supporting the IAF mission. The IAF is a 501c3 non-profit organization founded in 1973 with the core mission of supporting architectural education, enhancing public awareness of architecture, and preserving Indiana’s architectural legacy. For the past 45 years the IAF has awarded scholarships to deserving students and published books on Indiana architecture for both professional and amateur readers. Indiana Department of Natural Resources 2023 Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) Grant Program - Application packets are now available for the Fiscal Year 2023 HPF Matching Grant Program cycle. The HPF program assists certain types of local preservation projects conducted by municipal and county governments, not-for-profit organizations (including churches), and colleges and universities. The grant application deadline is Friday, October 7 at 5:00 p.m. Projects selected for funding will be awarded around June 1, 2023. The time to complete grant projects has been extended to 24 months. There are three project categories (Architectural & Historical, Archaeological, and Development) and each category has its own application packet. HPF grant awards are made using federal funds from the National Park Service. Local matching funds are required from any non-federal source. CLICK HERE to learn more. Residential Architecture in Indianapolis, 1820-1920 - Join book author and architectural historian Dr. James Glass as he describes in an illustrated lecture the rich variety of residences designed by Indianapolis architects during the city’s first century.
