Each year, the AIA UK Chapter initiates a variety of programs that provide continuing education units, required for most US and UK registered architects. These include lectures, film nights, drawing classes, building tours, private exhibition tours and social nights. We also have signature annual events as listed below.

The Super Saturday concept involves hosting a single day conference that maximizes the continuing education opportunities on a single day, taking in a variety of content including lectures and tours. Many of the attendees this year travelled that morning on the train from London and other cities in the Southeast of England in time for the first session at 9am, although we were thrilled to have an AIA CE chapter member from Ireland travel to attend the event. Several university students that participated in the chapter's student charrette in the autumn also attended.

It’s already July and we’re deep into the dog days of summer. While the heat came early this year, with unusually warm and humid weather in June, that hasn’t slowed us down at AIA Hong Kong. We enjoyed an active second quarter headlined by a successful joint symposium with the folks from AIA International Region and the US Green Building Council – The International Green Building Symposium – and sold-out Building Tours of landmark conservation projects right here at home – The Mills, Little Tai Hang and The Hong Kong Jockey Club University of Chicago Academic Complex.
In another highlight, our Young Architects Group completed its inaugural 10-week, peer-to-peer ARE Bootcamp. On the back of this success, plans are already in the works for a second Bootcamp later this year.
Sadly, the second quarter also brought news that Pritzker Prize-winning architect I.M. Pei, FAIA, RIBA, Hon. AIA (HK) had passed away in May, at the age of 102. The Guangdong-born architect was the mastermind behind the bold Louvre pyramid in Paris, the East Wing of the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., Japan’s Miho Museum near Kyoto, the striking Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar’s capital, Doha, and the landmark 70-storey Bank of China Tower here in Hong Kong. We all mourn the loss of this visionary architect and gracious gentleman.
Looking ahead to the remainder of the year, we have calls out for entries to our preeminent AIA Hong Kong Honors & Awards Program and to our Smart City Series: Design Competition, which we are jointly organizing with the HKIA and RIBA (HK). We also have Building Tours planned of the West Kowloon Freespace – Hong Kong’s new contemporary art performance center in the heart of the
West Kowloon Art Park
, the West Kowloon Competition Pavilion (“Growing Up”) – the winning design of AIA Hong Kong members Evelyn Ting and Paul Tse in the first Hong Kong Young Architects & Designers Competition, and Victoria Dockside.
We look forward to your competition entries and to seeing you at the building tours!
