ABI May 2021: Business conditions strengthen further at architecture firms

Work on existing buildings accounts for more than half of firm billings so far this year. Business conditions remained robust at architecture firms in May, as the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score climbed even higher. The score of 58.5 for the month (any score over 50 indicates billings growth) is one of the highest ever reported, and indicates that even more firms reported an increase in their billings in May than in April.

The Future of Parklets

As we move forward from the Shelter-in -place mode to post pandemic, some things that have been created by the pandemic will continue and may even become permanent. The pandemic made outdoor spaces more valuable. Spaces in the public right-of-way previously used for pedestrians and vehicles became valued human spaces for commerce.

Outside the bounds of the exact sciences and the Cartesian grid, magic denotes dthat which can’t easily be named or confined. Over the past months in working on this issue, we have come to see the rituals, incantations, illusions and various acts of magic as legitimate world-building strategies. Deployed intently and politically, these super-natural acts have served as a useful lens for understanding these dizzying and unmooring times.
