ABI April 2021: Architecture firm billings continue to rebound at a brisk pace

Business conditions at architecture firms continued to rebound at a strong clip in April, with the AIA’s Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score rising to 57.9 for the month (any score over 50 indicates billings growth). This is the highest ABI score since prior to the Great Recession, and indicates that a majority of architecture firms saw their billings increase this month.

Alameda City Council Approves Ordinance Requiring Newly Constructed Buildings to be All-Electric and CEQA Filing

The Alameda City Council approved an ordinance requiring all newly constructed buildings to be all-electric on June 1, 2021. This ordinance amends the 2019 California Energy Code to require newly constructed buildings to be all-electric with certain exceptions.

Berkeley Architect Talks Restaurant Parklets, from Permits to String Lights

In Berkeley, architects Rudabeh Pakravan and Kristen Sidell of Sidell Pakravan Architects worked with the city of Berkeley to create a free guide simplifying code criteria, permitting process and construction strategies. They created a webinar and offered their services pro bono, averaging 30 to 80 hours per parklet to help with everything from construction plans to string lights and murals

SFNOMA is Looking for Volunteers for their 2021 Project Pipeline summer camp


The Project Pipeline Architecture Summer Camp is camp for youth age 11 – 17. The camp is designed to expose youth to the built environment and architecture profession. As one of the few initiatives in the nation connecting youth and architecture. The camp will run virtually from July 12 to July 19.

The AIA Film Challenge 2021 is Open!

The AIA Film Challenge 2021 invites you to share stories of architects, civic leaders, and their communities working together to achieve a zero-carbon, resilient, healthy, just, and equitable built environment. This year, we’re asking for 1:30- to 3-minute short documentary films that you can produce from any device.

This position requires effective communication skills to build lasting relationships internally and externally with the FCGA team, clients, consultants, and strategic partners.

Via is currently seeking candidates for Architectural Design and Production based in our downtown Oakland CA office. This position would work on a variety of public projects, designing elements of civic infrastructure, including transit stations, corridors, bridges and their related elements.

Shah Kawasaki Architect is an award-winning 12-person firm located in Old-Town Oakland. While their projects vary in size and type, a typical project is $10-20 million and is staffed by a Project Architect with assistance from a junior level staff member. A senior associate mentors the team as the subject matter expert. Project Architects work directly with a principal from design through construction.

Oculus is currently seeking a Junior Level Architect to fill a full time position that offers experience in all aspects of project development – from initial design concepts through the development of working drawings and the completion of construction. The ideal candidate will have excellent design and graphic skills, and be adept at communicating directly with clients, city officials, and contractors.
