School's out for the summer and everyone is ready for some fun in the sun! In fact, many Kentucky members are headed to the desert this week for the A'19 Conference on Architecture in Las Vegas. There we will explore how architects can design better cities for a better future, but not to worry if you are sitting this one out. There are numerous opportunities for you right here at home.

Annual Code Workshops - Three Dates, Three Cities!

Our summer code workshops on the International Existing Building Code have been in high demand, with one location already sold out and seats for the remaining dates filling up fast. Register here without delay to grab a spot before registration closes! 
AIA KY Design & Service Awards

Projects may be submitted for the 2019 AIA Kentucky Design Awards until this Friday, June 7.

Local  chapter leaders will also be accepting nominations for the 2019 Service Awards until Friday, July 12 .

2020 AIA KY Nominating Committee

AIA Kentucky is seeking expressions of interest from members interested in a leadership position on the AIA Kentucky Board of Directors. 

The position of Secretary for 2019 will be open, with preference given to a Central Kentucky Chapter member to maintain geographic balance on the Executive Committee.  This is a one-year term that traditionally leads to ongoing service in subsequent years as Treasurer, President-Elect and then President of AIA Kentucky. 

The Associate Director, to be filled by an AIA Associate Member, serves a one-year term on the AIA Kentucky Board, for the 2020 calendar year. 

Architect Members interested in the Secretary position and Associate Members interested in the Director position should submit a letter of interest  to Nominating Committee Chairman (and Past President) John Robertson, AIA no later than Friday, July 19, 2019.
KY Social Event and Architectural Exhibit

The Congress for New Urbanism will be hosting their annual congress in Louisville from June 12-15th, 2019 and will welcome over 1,500 attendees to connect architects, urban planners, and place makers from around the globe. 

CNU attendees and AIA-KY members are invited to gather on Wednesday, June 12th, at the KMAC museum for a quiet hour of socializing and the opening of the architectural exhibit, "The Best of Kentucky". The exhibit will feature urban design solutions from across the bluegrass and surrounding areas and light food and drinks will be served.

AIA OVR Practice Innovation Lab

The AIA Ohio Valley Region invites you to envision the future of practice. The OVR Practice Innovation Lab (PIL) is a multi-day event where teams comprised of students, associates, architects, Fellows, and other seasoned professionals come together to develop new practice models in the profession of architecture. 

Teams will present their ideas for the future practice of architecture during a moderated discussion at the Ohio Valley Regional Convention, where convention attendees will vote for the People's Choice Award. (Travel stipends have been budgeted.)

Haffermann succeeds Steve Eggers, AIA, LEED AP, whose significant contributions as Architect, Partner and Managing Principal have shaped KNBA for the past 41 years. Eggers will remain a Principal with the firm. 

Weber Group Inc. is proud to announce the promotion of David Nofsinger to Associate Director of Construction. Nofsinger is a graduate of the University of Kentucky School of Architecture and Transylvania University. He will work alongside the Director of Construction, Dan Shehan.

NKY Members toured the Kent Lofts project in Belelvue on May 20

AIA Northern Kentucky enjoyed a great turnout for their recent construction tour of Bellevue's new Kent Lofts project. Hub + Weber Architects in Covington did the design work for this restoration and adaptive reuse of the Kent Manufacturing Warehouse into 66 warehouse-style apartments.

NCARB's Board of Directors approved a revised Strategic Plan at its April meeting, following several years of research, exploration, and stakeholder engagement. Stay tuned for details on the updated plan, which will launch this month at NCARB's Centennial Business Meeting.

As this newsletter comes to an end, the summer is just getting started. I want to remind an encourage you to plan ahead for several things in store:
  • There is still time to attend one of our June workshops on the IEBC. Sign up at aiaky.org/code19 by June 11.
  • Make sure that you renew your KY architectural license at ky.boa.gov by June 30. Contact the Board of Architects at (859) 246-2069 with any questions.
  • Watch for the latest edition of the AIA Kentucky Membership Directory and Firm Profile, which should land in your mailbox later this month. We'll have a new online flipbook up on our website shortly thereafter.
  • Think about nominating deserving individuals for our 2019 AIA Kentucky Special Awards. Categories recognize Member accomplishments as well as those of persons in the community whose work supports quality architecture, good design and building better communities. Learn more here.
  • Hope you have September 19-21 blocked off on your calendar so you can attend the AIA OVR Convention in Cincinnati. It's going to be GREAT!
