President's Message:
Tamara Burns reduced retouched

Dear Members,

The AIA Michigan Design Awards ceremony was wonderful this year and I want to share my thoughts about why design award programs are important to the architectural community.

Of course, there is recognition. As much as we try to deny it, we all have egos - some ..."healthier"... than others!

As architects, it's important to us that our work is experienced and used the way the client envisioned it and the way we executed the vision through the design of the building. We put our heart and soul into the designs we create and we put in long hours because to us design matters. We love what we do but we are our own toughest critics and it is high praise to be publically recognized by our peers for our creativity and for our contribution to the quality of the built environment.

So recognition is important and something that drives all of us to some degree to aspire to, however I believe there are two higher values to be gained. Those are Inspiration to the profession and raising the public's awareness of the importance of good design... (click here to read more!)

Sincerely,

Executive Director's Message:

June has been quite an exciting month!

I talked about National Convention news and updates in Monday Minutes, so I will report on the Design Awards. We had a successful event this year and drew in over 250 attendees. The venue, the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) was beautiful and provided a dramatic backdrop for the evening's events. This year was the first year we recognized the contributions of the contractors of design award projects. Another first for this year-- we honored student achievements in two ways: the Universities in the area sent their Deans to present the Student Gold Medal Awards and AIA Michigan awarded two Student Project Awards.

It isn't too early to think about Mid Summer Conference! Rooms at the Grand Hotel are filling up so please register as soon as possible. The Grand Hotel is running a special this year: If you stay three nights, August 8, 9 and 10, the forth night, August 11th will be at the rate of just $169.00 per room (not per person). Please take advantage of this when you are registering! (If you have registered already please email evelyn@aiami.com to let her know you are interested in the reduced Sunday night option). The Mid Summer Conference mailings went out last week and we will send out an event e-blast this week, but you can get all the information right now by clicking here for the online program brochure and registration information.
