President's Message:

AIA MI 2020 Vision
Advancing society through architecture.

AIA MI 2020 Mission
Champion the profession. Nurture our chapters. Build Michigan better.

Greetings from Miami, I'm here on behalf of the AIA Michigan region on the National Small Firm Round Table. I often hear "what has the AIA done for me?" As I sit at the Tiki Bar on a break out work session with successful architects from around the country (when it's 17 degrees at home) I think I have an answer. I'm involved so I benefit. Please contact me directly if you need to know information about current happenings in AIA MI.

We have an exciting year ahead of us and have set some big goals. We are planning the move to Midtown Detroit and hope to be in at the end of April 2015. We have negotiated about 1,800 square feet of space at the intersection of Woodward and Willis in a building designed by Quinn Evans Architects and constructed by Monahan Company. A committee of the Board has given design direction the building team, and we hope to continue giving updates in the Monday Minutes as things start to ramp up.

The other primary Goal we want to focus on is to "Nurture our Chapters" and provide better service to them. Cathy applied for a grant from AIA National to help us reach out to the chapters and bring in an expert to help us do just that. We intend to engage all of the Chapters and, together, define what we need to do to provide that better service. National is developing guidelines on how they think this should be accomplished. We want to work parallel with that development so we are part of the process and we can make the decisions that most affect us. This process will involve some re structuring of chapters, possible re structuring of the MI Board and By-Laws changes to make it happen.

We have 4 goals in the new 2020 AIA MI Strategic Plan developed by the board last year. Here is a link to that short document, please take time to look it over, its how we plan on making decisions and leading moving forward. I encourage your participation as we look at how to improve the profession and the association that supports it.

Save the Date for Legislative Meet and Greet
Dear AIAMI Members;

While the government affairs committee has worked to build relationships with legislators, nothing can replace one on one contact with constituents. As you know, Michigan will seat a new legislature in 2015, and in addition to returning legislators there will be a number of new faces as well.

Relationships between legislators and their constituent members is critical to the success of government affairs. To kick the 2015 / 2016 session off, we have planned a number of legislative "meet and greet" sessions throughout the state as follows;

February 13, 2015; Wayne County, Location Wade Trim, Detroit
Register Here

February 27, 2015; Macomb County, offices of AEW

These events will take a few hours out of your morning on the specified day. Please select the location where your legislator lives and mark your calendars. More information will be forthcoming, but please make it a point to save the date for these important events. Enjoy a continental breakfast, shake hands with your legislator, and help the government affairs committee kick of the legislative session on a high note.

Thank you

Greg Metz, AIA, GA Co-Chair

AIAMI / MAF Speakers Bureau: Call for Presentations
AIA Michigan and the MAF want to get the word out about the benefits architects provide to their communities. To accomplish this we are gathering passionate speakers to create the Speakers Bureau which, in conjunction with our local chapters, will bring exciting, informative presentations to organizations around the state. This is a great opportunity for our members to raise awareness about their firm's work and their passion while advocating for the architectural profession.

Applications are being accepted. Submit your application to [email protected] with a subject line that includes " Speakers Bureau" to be considered. If you are a member in good standing and would like to join the Speakers Bureau, please review the Call for Presentations and the Speaker Questionnaire.
