President's Message:
Paul Dannels

During the past month AIA Michigan completed its two annual legislative events.  On March 5 at our Michigan Legislative Day, thirty-eight AIA Michigan architects met with their state legislators in Lansing. On March 20 at the national Grassroots Conference thirteen of our members met with their legislators in Washington DC.

These two events are crucially important opportunities to educate our elected lawmakers about issues of importance to our profession, but they are also powerful outward manifestations of the fact that the AIA is working each day in both Lansing and Washington DC to see that our shared interests are advanced. At each level of government we have dedicated staff support, a political action committee guided by legislative professionals, and of course member volunteers faithfully serving through various committees. The commitment to informed and effective legislative action is apparent to anyone who has attended one of these carefully crafted and efficiently executed events.

In Washington the issues we advocated included a National Design Services Act, which would permit student loans for architectural education to be paid through approved community service programs. In Lansing we advanced issues including ideas for Certificate of Merit legislation that would help to prevent frivolous lawsuits against design professionals.

I want to you to know that efforts on these and other issues are ongoing, but I also want you to know there is a place for your help.  Our Government Affairs Committee welcomes your involvement and invites you to our events next year. Make a note to yourself now to plan to be a part of our efforts next March, and in the meantime, always feel free to contact me... paul@sdistructures.com.

Wishing you the best in your practice...

Executive Director's Message:
Cathy HeadshotHappy March!

I had a great time at Grassroots last week learning about new AIA initiatives and networking with representatives from across the country. This year's Grassroots program was refocused on leadership development and almost 700 members and component staff attended. Handouts, reports, award winners and other items from Grassroots are now available through a link on the Grassroots webpage (including a link to the new Cool Spaces promotional video with the AIA credit at the end). Thanks to everyone who attended this year's Grassroots Leadership Conference and make sure you save the date for the 2015 Conference: March 4-6, 2015!

Next month brings National Architecture Week! This year it will be held April 6-12. If you are looking for ways your local chapter members can celebrate National Architecture Week, AIA National has six ways to start on their website.

And I hope to see many of you next month at the "Cool Spaces!" season premiere episode viewing party with special guest, Stephen Chung, AIA, host of "Cool Spaces!" This new series about architecture is made possible by underwriting from the AIA and will debut on your local public television station this spring. Hosted by Stephen Chung, AIA, the series explores in eight episodes how architects and their clients use innovative technology and practiced design traditions to shape the world. The program, which reaches 100 percent of households in the country, is designed for a general audience and will seek to demystify the work that architects do, helping to build awareness of how nearly every aspect of the built environment can be improved and refined with an architect's hand. Please see the article below for event information and I look forward to seeing you at the viewing party on April 16th!

I hope to hear your ideas about our programs and events, so please contact me anytime and I hope to see you at an AIA Michigan event in 2014!
