President's Message:
Paul Dannels

Many of us had the opportunity to meet and enjoy one another's company earlier this month on Mackinac Island at our annual Mid Summer Conference. Among the many rewarding conversations that I enjoyed on the island, I'm particularly grateful for Dean Monica Ponce de Leon, AIA's gracious and affirmative response to my invitation to join the AIA Michigan Board of Directors.  She'll be representing the University of Michigan's Taubman College as our Education Director on our Board for 2015 and 2016. AIA Michigan has been blessed by exceptional support from the deans of our state's colleges of architecture. In June of this year, at our Honor Awards celebration, we bestowed our Gold Medal on Dean Glen LeRoy, FAIA of Lawrence Technological University. We honored Glen for among other things, his exceptional service as our Education Director and Regional Director. And of course Dean Will Wittig, AIA of the University of Detroit Mercy currently serves as our Board Secretary and will be our Treasurer next year. Carey Carscallen at Andrews and Brian Craig, AIA at Kendall are valued allies, and we wish Brian the best as his new program gets under way this semester.

AIA Michigan is committed to continued strong relationships with our state's accredited institutions, which develop exceptional talent that is valued all over the country, and all over the world.

As professionals and practitioners, let's give careful thought to ways in which we can keep the best of Michigan graduates employed in Michigan practices. We're blessed to have such talent developing in our midst.

Always feel free to contact me... [email protected]

...and wishing you the best in your practice...

Executive Director's Message:
Cathy HeadshotHappy August!

I hope everyone is having an enjoyable summer and is looking forward to the long weekend ahead. I have a few updates for you before I launch into new fall programming announcements. For the first time and exclusively for AIA members: Get the latest edition of The Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice digitally. Previously, you were forced to buy the whole volume, but now select chapters are available for individual purchase only to AIA members, which is especially great for EPs or small firms. Click here for more details.

You might have also seen the BCRC code book annoucement in the Monday Minutes regarding the new 2012 MBC and the 2012 Rehabilitation Code, and their availability for purchase. Follow this link to the ICC to review the books and use this LARA link to purchase the code book at the member price. Remember, these codes are law on October 9, 2014.

This month, I would like to highlight an important change to our fall schedule of events. This year's Annual Meeting + Leadership Conference will be held from October 9-11th and will offer members an opportunity for leadership training, continuing education and several exciting tours! Instead of waiting until the Leadership Retreat's usual January date to dig into the year, your local chapter boards will be ready to start innovating right after your Board Transition! This event is perfect for state and local board members, prospective members who are interested in learning more about our board activities, and any members who want continuing education and leadership skill building. More details will be available next month on our website.

Other AIA Michigan Fall program highlights:

The new Green Health Summit held on September 8th, will kick-off Stair Week in Michigan. The committee has gathered an impressive group of speakers and panelists from across the country for the summit and we know it will reinforce Michigan's prominence in the evolution of design. Spaces are limited, so be sure to register as soon as possible.

The 2nd Annual Tigers Tailgate will be held this year on September 12th. We will be tailgating at the DAC for the tasty food, great view of the stadium and short stroll to the game. The event had such a positive response last year that we have increased the number of tickets this year and secured an even better seating block! Be sure to register for your ticket today!

After cheering for the Tigers in the heart of the Motor City, escape to a rustic setting away from the traffic and congestion at the Design Retreat, which will commemorate its 25th anniversary this year. The Retreat will be held September 19-20th and the committee has planned special activities and events to celebrate the occasion! The 2014 Korab Award Winner and founder of the Heidelberg Project, Tyree Guyton, will be one of our special guests at the retreat. Visit our website for more information and to register!

I would love to hear your ideas about our programs and events, so please contact me anytime and I hope to see you at an AIA Michigan event this summer!
