AIA Michigan and AGC of Michigan held its Mid Summer Conference on Mackinac Island August 6-8. Our format was slightly different this year. The continuing education was open to all members via live streaming.

This was a great success and we hope to continue in the future. Kermit Baker, AIA National economist and Ken Simonson, AGC economist spoke to us about the future outlook of the architecture and construction industry. This was free to all members of AIA and AGC. If you missed the presentation you can view it here.

COVID-19 Re-opening tools & resources
AIA convened a virtual charrette with architects and experts in public health, engineering, and facilities management to develop guidance for building re-occupancy. Input from the charrette led to a new Building Risk Management Plan Worksheet, enhanced Re-occupancy Assessment Tool, and expanded ArchMap.
AIA RE-OCCUPANCY ASSESSMENT TOOL
AIA Re-occupancy Assessment Tool which provides a framework of strategies for re-opening buildings. Informed by authoritative sources (CDC, WHO, OSHA, etc.) and public health experts, the tool includes baseline parameters for re-occupancy, architectural and engineering strategies, and administrative policies that promote the health, safety, and welfare of the public while creating opportunities for non-essential facilities to provide services.
How AIA contracts address the COVID-19 pandemic
For the foreseeable future, the design and construction industry may experience considerable disruptions, such as material shortages, construction delays, work stoppages, and suspended and terminated projects due to the coronavirus pandemic. This article provides some tips on how to handle project delays, suspensions, and terminations with AIA documents, and also provides a list of some insurance issues to consider.

NCARB is excited to announce that Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) candidates will be able to schedule remote-proctored appointments in mid-November 2020. Remote (or online) proctoring enables candidates to take the ARE in a private location that meets specific requirements.

Whether you plan on testing in-person or online, here are several updates all candidates should be aware of. You can read the full remote proctoring launch announcement online.
AIA RACIAL EQUITY INITIATIVE

Harnessing the passion of our Members and the broader design community, AIA National is taking steps to advance racial justice and equality in our organization, in our profession, and in our communities.

AIA National has begun to put together resources which represent just a few tools to help bridge the gap – the gap between complacency and knowledge, between knowledge and action, and between action and progress.

We invite you to contact AIA National at feedback@aia.org to suggest additional resources.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Due to the restrictions of Covid19 and the challenges of keeping our members and guests safe, we will be canceling the in-person awards ceremony for 2020.

APAC Architects Political Action Committee

We know that many of our fellow AIA Members have been hit hard with the COVID-19 pandemic and it’s affect on your business and personal life. The last thing you may be thinking of doing is contributing to APAC right now. But give us a moment to share with you a couple thoughts.

  • This is the end of the legislative session in Michigan.
  • A legislative cycle lasts two years where we deal with some consistency amongst our elected officials
  •  After the cycle ends we have to start over next year with new faces and initiatives.
  • This is the last opportunity to push through two legislative efforts.
  • The Government Affairs Committee has highlighted these issues in the GAC Legislative updates that can be found on the AIA Michigan website.
  • Historic Tax Credits
  • Certificate of Merit
  • This is a presidential election year which always amplifies the political process.

This year’s $20 in support of APAC’s $20 in 2020 Campaign! was designed to encourage first time donations to APAC and assist in the progress of focusing on architectural related issues in Lansing that support our practice. Please consider giving to APAC this year as we work toward our goal of $10,000. Giving is simple, just follow the link to the APAC donation page and click on the amount you wish to give. All donations must be from personal funds, no corporate donations are allowed by law. Donating by credit card is easy and fast.

Please consider donating now as you read this update.

Only personal contributions allowed
Affiliations able to contribute: AIA/AIAE, FAIA, Associate AIA

Thank you and with great appreciation,

APAC
