President Message
Before I applied to the architecture school at the University of Michigan, I lived in Japan for a school year and studied the language. It was a wonderful experience in many ways, but the most unique was one I hadn’t expected. I lived in a small town where I was one of perhaps 70 Americans. At the beginning of the year, I had a hard time understanding the local dialect and felt hopelessly out of place. People stared at me wherever I went, even leaving rooms when I entered. Emerging Professionals Corner
Fall greetings to AIA Michigan. Don’t be tempted to listen to the holiday music just yet. Plenty of autumn activities have been occurring in our great state. A cornucopia of AIA programs have kept most of us very busy. If you haven’t had time to engage, we have more great things coming.

  • Max and Debra Ernst Heart Center had a Sept. 30 opening at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. Southfield-based Harley Ellis Devereaux is the architect and engineer for the project
  • Paul Royal, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, has joined the Detroit Quinn Evans Architects office as a construction administrator. Royal will play a key role in the firm’s restoration of Michigan Central Station.
  • Thank you one and all that voted. The Holly Depot has finished in the vote totals to receive a $150,000 Grant.
