I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather this weekend and that the Easter Bunny left you lots of goodies!

 

This week we feel like relaxing now the A.R.E. Seminar, the "Cool Spaces!" premiere screening and the "Streamlining the Path to Licensure" events went well... BUT... we can't relax yet because we have big announcements to make about the AIA Michigan Design and Honor Awards this week! This year the awards ceremony and reception will be held on June 7, 2014 at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum! Stay tuned for more announcements in your inbox!

 

And here is a little reminder to save the date for the annual Mid Summer Conference! Join us August 7-9th!

RIP: Prof. Aldo Colandrea, friend of AIA Michigan
We regret to inform the membership of the sudden passing of Aldo Colandrea. Aldo was a dedicated professor at University of Detroit Mercy for over 30 years and many AIA Michigan members have looked to him for instruction and mentorship. He will be greatly missed and if you would like to pay your respects to Aldo and the Colandrea family, please note the following:

Visitation: Monday, April 21, 2014 - 5:00-9:00pm and also on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 - 2:00-9:00pm at John Molnar Funeral Home: 14032 Northline Rd., Southgate, MI 48195. (Phone: 734.285.1515). 
 
His service will also be held at the John Molnar Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 @ 10:00am.

 

Continuing Education Opportunity of the Week: AIA Southwest Concrete Plant Tour - Sign up Today!
Please join the AIA Southwest Michigan chapter on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at the Consumers Concrete Plant at 1100 Nazareth Rd, Kalamazoo, MI 49048 for a tour with the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek NAWIC chapters. Attendees will gather at 4:15 PM and the program will run from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM.

This is a great opportunity for continuing education with 1.5 HSW hours offered to participants.

*Please wear construction type footwear and personal attire. Safety glasses will be furnished on site*

Also, refreshments will be served courtesy of the tour hosts and the tour is free to all participants!

Volterra Dates Announced: Earn Continuing Education on Vacation in Italy!
Volterra The University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture and the Volterra Detroit Foundation are pleased to announce a Fall program in the historic Etruscan city of Volterra, Italy to earn 24 AIA HSW units.  
 
The program begins on September 27 and ends October 5, 2014.  You will stay at the newly renovated Volterra International Residential College and tour Florence and Siena as part of the program.  A flat fee includes rooms, meals, transportation and course and tour fees.  Spouses, partners, family and friends are welcome to join you in this exciting adventure.  Space is limited and will be allocated on a first come first serve basis, so sign up now!

BCRC Building Codes Seminar!

AIA Detroit BC&RC presents: The New 2012 Michigan Building Code (MBC): An Overview and Look into the Significant Changes from 2009. The 2012 Michigan Building Code is on the way, come and learn about the changes on Thursday, May 15, 2014 from 9:00am-4:00pm (Lunch is included!)!

 

Continuing Education - 6 hours of HSW Learning Units!

 

Seminar Description:

Michigan will use a new building code; don't be caught designing to an outdated code! The Bureau of Construction Codes current expected adoption date is September 26, 2014.The new requirements in the 2012 MBC are extensive; over 160 changes covering nine different chapters, but not limited to, safety glazing, means of egress, and fire sprinkler systems. The significant differences between the current 2009 edition of the MBC and the new 2012 version will be presented by Mr. Jay Woodward of the International Code Council at the San Marino Club in Troy, Michigan. Attendees will receive free ICC workbooks detailing the changes in the new code; lunch is included. At the seminar mid-break, Mr. Ben Tiseo of the Michigan Government Affairs Committee will explain the new Michigan requirement for mandatory continuing education.

State of Michigan Continuing Education Requirement Letter
We first reported on the new continuing education rules in 2013, thanks to updates from the Government Affairs Committee. Now that the new state-mandated continuing education rules are in effect, they have prompted questions. To remind members of the requirements, the official letter from the State of Michigan is shown below. You can also download the letter here.

AIA + 2030 Professional Series

The AIA+2030 Professional Series began Sept 26, 2013 and continues through 2014. This series helps design professionals create buildings that meet the ambitious energy efficiency goals of the 2030 Challenge. Ten, 4-hour sessions offer strategies to reach 60% reduction in fossil fuel greenhouse gas emissions, giving design professionals the knowledge and leverage to create next-generation, super-efficient buildings and provide firms with the skills that will set them apart in the marketplace.
