Weekly Highlights
179D Tax Deduction
Last week Congress voted to restore and extend the 179D tax energy efficient commercial building deduction. The 179D deduction is used by thousands of design professionals each year. Since its inception in 2005 it has spurred job creation in the design and construction industry and helped architects design more energy efficient buildings, saving both consumers and taxpayers millions of dollars in lower energy bills. Despite this track record, 179D expired at the end of last year. But thanks to a major grassroots effort by AIA members like you, Congress voted to extend it to cover projects completed in 2015 and 2016. Because AIA members spoke up, Congress listened. As we move into the critical 2016 election year, Congress will be debating many issues that affect architects and the built environment. Working together, we can make sure they hear from architects.
