December 2015

Champion the profession. Nurture our chapters. Build Michigan better.

President's Message:

Season's Greetings,

It was a busy year, and it's time to evaluate whether we accomplished our goals for the year.  Vision: Advancing society through architecture.  Mission: Champion the profession. Nurture our chapters. Build Michigan better.  Everything we attempted was based on these core statements and the Four Objectives of the AIA Michigan 2020 Strategic Plan.  I asked the Board and the Staff to consider if we were honoring the Strategic Plan as we made decisions for the future of our Organization and Profession.   I give us a solid B, there is always room for improvement.
We relocated our headquarters from Downtown to Midtown Detroit @ Woodward and Willis.  I invite everyone to the Holiday Party and Grand Opening from 4 to 7 pm on December 10th.   We had donations to the new Suite and I would like to thank them for their generosity.

Excel Hand dryer / Duker-Reilly-McPherson & Assoc., Inc.

Carpet / Shaw Contract Group   |   Shaw Hard Surface

Bathroom Tile / Genesee Ceramic Tile Dist.

Wall Art Metal / CENTRIA, CASS Sheetmetal

Plumbing Fixtures / ETNA, INFUSION, Kohler   Company

Ceiling Tile / Armstrong World Industries , ASI   Building Products

Electrical Fixtures / Gasser   Bush Associates, Edgewood Electric

Wall Art Light Pane /  Forms+Surfaces

We took some big swings at repositioning, and we created a dialog on how to increase the value of AIA to the membership on the State and Local level.  There will be a smaller, more nimble Board of Directors at AIA Michigan, and we have electronic voting in place.  When it came to repositioning, one thing I found was that we had many differing opinions on how to accomplish it, and everyone who took part was very, very passionate about our profession.  It never came to blows, and I don't think we lost any friendships over the deal, but there were some severe negotiations.  The main result was that we have the ability to have Sections in addition to Chapters.  Detroit, Flint, Mid-Michigan, Grand Rapids, Huron Valley & Southwest Michigan have chosen to remain chapters.  Saginaw Valley, Northern Michigan,  Upper Great Lakes and the Upper Peninsula have chosen to become Sections.  Chapters will be working on how to provide all Minimum Core Services, with the help of AIA Michigan.  AIA Michigan will be tasked with providing those services to the Sections.  I'm happy to have a coffee or phone call with anyone who wants more information.

It's been a pleasure to serve you as President this year.  I have to thank the people that helped me along the way, you know who you are.  Best wishes for a Happy and Prosperous 2016.

Regards,

Jeff Ferweda, AIA
