AIA Michigan
September  2017

Champion the profession. Nurture our chapters. Build Michigan better.
President's Message

First, I would like to offer my personal congratulations to all those who presented at the annual Design Retreat.  The range and quality of the thirteen featured projects was excellent, which of course is a reflection of all the great design work happening in Michigan today.  And 'a good time was definitely had by all' as they say.  If you have not made it to this event in the past, I can recommend it to you highly.  You will find it to be an enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere, and it's easy to 'plug-in' if you are new to the event.  Its a great way to take a break in a lovely setting while still getting inspired to re-focus on your work when you return, so mark your calendars for next year.
I would also like to highlight another great opportunity for all AIA Michigan members to become more involved, which is the upcoming leadership retreat/annual meeting.  It will take place at the Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City on October 12th and 13th, concluding with our Annual Meeting.  If you have not attended the Leadership Retreat in the past, its important to know that this event is not exclusive to current chapter and state board members and officers - all members are invited.  Of course, we hope that all current and recently elected board members, officers, and committee chairs will be joining us, but we are also hoping that those of you who are not as actively involved will take advantage of this great opportunity to learn more about and contribute your perspective to AIA.  The program includes several leadership development seminars, other continuing education sessions, and lots of opportunities for networking.  Plus, I know everyone will enjoy the winery tour and dinner at Black Star Farms, and of course you can extend your stay and make it an amazing fall weekend in Traverse City.  This event is a key opportunity to advance the leadership capacity of the organization, and thus our collective work together as we move forward, so I do hope you will join us in October.

Emerging Professionals Corner
Samantha Szeszulski, Associate AIA
This month, many of us spent a weekend up north at Camp Arbutus Hayo-went ha near Traverse City, Michigan for the 28th annual AIA Michigan Design Retreat.  It was a beautiful, northern Michigan weekend, with perfect weather for campfires and cabins - so much though that is was somewhat of a shame to spend Saturday inside watching project presentations. However, it quality of the projects and excellence in design made it well worth it.  From the Michigan Lake House by Environment Architects and Desai Chai Architecture to the Lake Trust Credit Union by SmithGroupJJR and the Detroit East Riverfront Plan by McIntosh Poris Associates, the project presented exemplified the finest attention to detail and expression of concept.  As a first-time attendee, it was well worth the time to spend a weekend immersed in the company of some of the finest designer in Michigan and some from across the country.  I would recommend attendance to all, especially emerging professionals.
If you missed the Design Retreat, don't worry. AIA Michigan has another opportunity for you to retreat to Traverse City surrounded by those most passionate about the profession. The 2017 Leadership Retreat and Annual Meeting is coming up in October (12th -13th) at Grand Traverse Resort. The retreat's program is filled with updated and opportunities relating to AIA Michigan and how to get further involved, wine tours, and leadership and firm training from Leadership Strategist Cynthia D'Amour. This kind of leadership training can be invaluable for young professionals working towards leadership position, both in the field and in AIA.  You can find more information on registering for the event here: Leadership/Annual Meeting Retreat Registration
