258 High St is a tenant improvement project for the new location of Newmark’s Palo Alto office. The design highlights the one-story building’s existing industrial-like features with a fresh and polished material palette to reflect the company’s recent re-branding. The new space creates a welcoming and flexible work environment with areas for collaboration, formal and informal meetings, and all-hands events.

In a society dependent on cars, every one—law-breaking and law-abiding alike—is subject to discretionary policing. Policing the Open Road shows how the new procedures sanctioned discrimination by officers, and ultimately under mined the nation’s commitment to equal protection before the law.

ABI August 2021: Business conditions remain strong at architecture firms, despite concerns about the Delta variant
Most firms have already reopened from their pandemic closures. Architecture firm billings remained strong in August, with an Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score of 55.6 (any score over 50 indicates billings growth). Despite some concerns about the ongoing impact of the Delta variant, most firms are continuing to report robust business conditions. Firms also reported that they continue to receive many inquiries into new projects, and that the value of contracts that they are signing for new design work is still growing.

What’s Next – AIA October Update
Architecture firms around the country are continuing to report strong billings growth even through the complications of the Delta variant. On the return-to-work front, short-term challenges remain—such as implementing and enforcing a business-wide vaccine policy—yet many firms are turning their attention back to developing long-term solutions to make our society healthier and more affordable.

AIA California Declares a Climate Emergency
There is little to deny our climate is changing and as leaders in the design of the built environment, we have the responsibility to act as stewards of our planet. We are witnessing the devastating consequences of the rapidly changing climate, and the best scientists are now concerned we are reaching a tipping point more rapidly than earlier estimated. There is no time to lose in transforming the design and delivery of architecture. To that end, on July 24, 2021, the AIA California Board of Directors officially declared a climate emergency to immediately accelerate the de-carbonization of the built environment.

Outside the bounds of the exact sciences and the Cartesian grid, magic denotes dthat which can’t easily be named or confined. Over the past months in working on this issue, we have come to see the rituals, incantations, illusions and various acts of magic as legitimate world-building strategies. Deployed intently and politically, these super-natural acts have served as a useful lens for understanding these dizzying and unmooring times.
