AIA Ohio’s recent community conference “Reconvene” celebrated our greatest attributes, our members. I have always felt our greatest strength at AIA Ohio is our relationships. AIA Ohio advocates for placemaking based on relationships, providing positive change for our communities. As we know, place and placemaking are critical to the development of our cultures and communities. Each revolves around its people, and are dependent on one another. My place includes family, faith, community, and knowledge based on experience and education. Each of our places is different, but each day we practice, we learn, and we grow.

AIA Ohio Government Affairs
|
Budget Bill, House Bill 33, the Governor exercised a Line-Item Veto of House Bill 65 and Senate Bill 67’s attempt to circumvent the Ohio Building Code permitting process. Reflecting AIA’s argument, the Governor’s Veto Message states in relevant part, “Ohio’s building and fire codes are based on model codes developed by experts on fire science and risks.*** Our current system is designed to have strict standards with the ability for local inspectors to issue variances from certain codes when appropriate, and this [vetoed] provision could result in a significant life safety risk to Ohioans.”

AIA Ohio Foundation Student Scholarship Recipients
There are many things that we do on a regular basis, as architects, that are very rewarding. Sometimes, that is the completion of a new project that makes a difference to a client or a whole community. Other times, we might give new life to an old, underutilized historic building. In each case, our work should have a positive impact on both individuals and the community at large.

In August, the AIA Columbus Fellows and EP Committees hosted a Sip and Sketch. Ruth Gless, FAIA, and Tim Hawk, FAIA, gave a lesson in sketching basics to start. Following the lesson were three rounds of sketching the surrounding buildings at different scales. Each round included a throwdown for everyone to view each other's work and discuss. These exercises challenged attendees to see the city around them in different ways and to hear and see different perspectives of the city.
AIA Youngstown Makes Move
AIA Youngstown has for the last 28 years made our home at the Ohio One Building in Youngstown’s downtown area. For many years, this was the home for board meetings, our chapter computers, and, when AIA required each chapter to have a local phone, our AIA Youngstown (Eastern Ohio) answering machine. The office also served as a gathering place for our Lunch-n-Learns as well as other chapter events and meetings.
