As we begin the new year, AIA Ohio is continuing the implementation of our strategic plan. The first year of this effort allowed AIA Ohio opportunities for advancing our mission with the goals of enhancing member engagement, expanding government advocacy, elevating the public awareness of architecture, and ensuring organizational vitality.

Advisory on Indemnification Bill for Ohio Design Professionals

Ohio recently enacted a law to limit malpractice liability on public improvements for licensed design professionals including architects, landscape architects, engineers and surveyors. The bill, SB56, was introduced by Sen. Bill Blessing (R-08), a licensed professional engineer. AIA Ohio submitted testimony in support of this legislation which passed both houses and was signed by the Governor in December. AIA Ohio members are invited to participate in Advocacy Day, taking place on Tuesday, March 7, in Columbus. This is AIA Ohio's signature advocacy event which offers every member the opportunity to directly impact the profession here in Ohio.

Attendees will hear from experts at AIA National who will offer an overview on legislative activity in other states and Ohio’s connection with National on legislative issues.

The “S” Word: What Difference Does It Make?

Yep. The “S” Word. There are a lot of things going through a lot of people’s minds right now, and most probably couldn’t be written in this article. But, just so we don’t go down the wrong path early, the “S” word we are referring to is “scholarship”. This is, after all, an article on the AIA Ohio Foundation. But while we talk about scholarships and the need for more scholarships, and the value of scholarships, we never really talk about the impact of scholarships. Like many other things in life, it is all about your perspective.

AIA Cincinnati Update

This year Cincinnati celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Zaha Hadid designed Contemporary Arts Center, the 75th anniversary of the Natale de Blois designed Terrace Plaza, and the 25th anniversary of the death of India Boyer, the first woman licensed to practice architecture in Ohio and AIA Cincinnati’s first female member. AIA Cincinnati will be highlighting women in our chapter throughout the year in a series of profile pieces and with programs in conjunction with the CAC’s exhibit on Hadid’s work this autumn.

In January, AIA Columbus hosted Kimberly McMurray, AIA, of Behavioral Health Facility Consulting LLC and Philip Ross of Safehinge Primera for a presentation on building a safe behavioral health environment of care. These two internationally known leaders are working to advance the design of mental and behavioral health facilities. The session focused on assessing ligature risk in the physical environment and what to do about identified risks considering regulatory changes in recent years. Attendees were also able to test out a model of the Safehinge behavioral health patient room door hardware that received a Nightingale Award at the 2022 Healthcare Design Conference.
