AIARE Scholarship Fund News

Before I introduce our AIA Redwood Empire’s Scholarship Program recipients for the 2023-2024 school year, I’d like to first thank everyone who contributed to our endowment during our recent fundraising drive. We raised a total of $17,100, which has increased our endowment to more than $57,000! This will significantly enhance our ability to award more and/or larger scholarships to deserving students. Thank you to each of the individuals, foundations, and firms that contributed!

Our awardees for the 2023-2024 school year include Zoe Frothinger (UC Berkeley) and Ismael Carreno Ortiz (Cal Poly Pomona). This is the first year we have supported Zoe, and the second year for Ismael. In addition, we have awarded a scholarship to a first-time recipient, Elisha Green who will be attending the University of Oregon. Each scholarship is in the amount of $1,000. In addition, we are applying for matching grants from AIA National’s scholarship matching program, a program that has awarded grants to our awardees for the past several years.

Since its founding in 2005, our AIARE Scholarship Fund has awarded a total of $27,800 to 21 architecture students throughout our chapter area, from Petaluma to Arcata. In addition to myself, current members of our Scholarship Committee are Aaron Jobson, Jaime Stich, Drew Weigl, and Sara Woodfield.

In closing, I wish to thank everyone who has contributed to the Fund, both recently and over the past nearly 20 years. Being able to support local architecture students is rewarding and has made an important difference to many students over the years who rely on such scholarships to fund their education.

Autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) is a type of precast concrete with an expansion agent that rises the mixture, similar to yeast in bread dough. Once cured, this type of concrete contains about 80% air. Autoclaved aerated concrete is factory-made, and the material is molded into blocks or slabs with precise dimensions.
Looking to make an impact in the architectural profession? AIA California Board of Directors members shape the direction and activities of the largest state AIA in the country. Standing for election offers a platform to lead, learn, and contribute.

AIA California leadership is comprised of two main groups, the Board of Directors and the board’s Executive Committee. Each holds different responsibility.

The Board of Directors establishes policy. With elected leaders from across the state, it is composed of: individuals who represent 21 local components, ex officio members of the Executive Committee, and members who represent California at AIA, the national level.
