Incorporating the Forgotten Thermal Benefits of Brick
Tuesday, July 20, 2021
12:00 - 1:00 p.m.
via Zoom

While frequently chosen for aesthetics and durability, clay brick is not often considered when energy efficiency is a primary concern, even though it historically played a significant role in occupant comfort before widespread use of HVAC systems. This course discusses the basics of heat transfer, relevant energy code provisions for walls, and how current research by the National Brick Research Center demonstrates the role that brick veneer can play in meeting or exceeding energy requirements in modern wall assemblies.

Attendees will earn 1 hour of HSW credit.

AIA Film Challenge
Design has the power to solve some of the biggest issues facing cities today. We believe these stories are among the most important stories we can tell. The AIA Film Challenge is a film contest that amplifies the stories of architecture projects that are transforming communities through the power of design and collaboration.

The AIA Film Challenge 2021 invites you to share stories of architects, civic leaders, and their communities working together to achieve a zero-carbon, resilient, healthy, just, and equitable built environment. Learn more about these topics

This year, participants will produce a 1:30- to 3-minute short documentary film on any device—including smartphones, tablets, and GoPros—for a chance to win $5,000. Winners will also receive exposure on AIA’s online channels, as well as via partner film and architecture organizations.

A panel of judges made up of architects, film/media professionals, and influencers will select the Grand Prize Winner, the Runner Up, and the Third Place Winner based on the films’ adherence to the prompt, storytelling arc, architectural placement, and technical merit.

The People’s Choice Award winner is chosen by public voting that opens on August 30.

New Oklahoma Interior Design Law
House Bill 1147 was signed by Governor Stitt on May 10, 2021 and went into effect on July 1, 2021. This bill made some changes to the Oklahoma State Architectural and Registered Commercial Interior Designers Act. Here are some of the highlights of the new law:

  • The title "Registered Interior Designer" changes to "Registered Commercial Interior Designer."
  • The Board will be comprised of six Architects, two Landscape Architects, two Registered Commercial Interior Designers, and one public member.
  • Registered Commercial Interior Designers now have a seal that they may use to seal technical submissions, excluding fire and life safety systems, for nonstructural interior construction for the Code Use Groups listed and defined in 59 OS, section 46.21b, unless prepared under the responsible control of an Oklahoma-licensed Architect, and signed and sealed by that Architect.

Important New Definitions:
  • "Commercial Interior Design" means the rendering of or the offering to render designs, consultations, studies, planning, drawings, specifications, contract documents or other technical submissions and the administration of interior construction and contracts relating to nonstructural interior construction by a registered commercial interior designer in a new constructed or existing building when the core and shell elements are not going to be changed; OS 59, 46.3 (17)
  •  "Nonstructural Commercial Interior Construction" means the construction of elements which do not include exterior components of a building such as exterior walls, any load-bearing wall, any load-bearing column or any other load-bearing elements of a building essential to the structural integrity of the building such as wind loads and seismic loads and to any element which must be designed for wind loads and seismic loads; and OS 59, 46.3 (18)
  •  "Fire and Life Safety Systems" means those systems and construction that pertain to fire and life safety protection, such as fire sprinklers, fire alarms, smoke evacuation systems, fire walls, fire barriers or smoke barriers as defined by the current International Building Code adopted by the Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission. OS 59, 46.3 (19)
