AIA CENTRAL OKLAHOMA NEWS

Sponsor Spotlight - Olsson
We are thankful for the support we receive at AIA Central Oklahoma from our sponsors.  Since we aren't seeing each other right now, we'd like to spotlight one of our chapter package sponsors each week!

2020  Composite Sponsor!

Three facts about Olsson!

1).  Olsson maintains over 90% of its revenue generation from repeat clients.

2).  We are 1 of only 2 partners to support the Oklahoma City Dodgers MVP Program encouraging STEM education with easy-to-use and powerful education tools for teachers. Used in classrooms across Oklahoma, the Dodgers MVP Program helps third- and fourth-grade teachers - at absolutely no cost to teachers or their students - motivate students to learn and participate inside and outside the classroom by recognizing and rewarding students for their achievements.

3).  Olsson has over 90 employees in Oklahoma with offices in Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Our designs focus on improving communities, making it them sustainable, better connected, and more efficient. Team based and purpose driven, we offer a comprehensive list of services: planning and design, engineering, field services, environmental, and technology.

A little more about Olsson:

MEET CRAIG: We have an amazing new Business Development Leader at Olsson - Craig Parrish. Craig can serve as your key point of contact on any services needs to complete your architectural design. Olsson provides multidisciplinary design services for mixed-use, commercial, and residential land development. We also provide development services for industrial, sports and recreation, educational, data center, and healthcare projects.

We can't wait to more personally introduce him to the AIA community.

Olsson performed the on-site materials testing and inspections for the 646,000-square-foot Amazon Warehouse facility is a concrete tilt-up building that includes three elevated interior levels with a structural steel interior, mass grading, drilled piers, utility trenching and backfill, site-work with associated truck courts, driveways, and parking lots.
Testing and inspections included the following: fill placement, utility trench backfill, foundation bearing materials, reinforced concrete, floor flatness and levelness, roughness testing as part of floor flatness, structural masonry, structural steel erection, precast concrete wall erection, roofing inspections, building and pavement subgrades, and asphaltic concrete pavement, and SWPPP inspection.

Oklahoma City Zoo - Olsson improved the aesthetics and navigability of this major city attraction's parking lot and pedestrian facilities

PANEL DISCUSSION: K-12 Preparing Back to School - with COVID-19
We're all making decisions on a daily basis to keep our families and employees safe in the midst of the pandemic.  Superintendents have the difficult decision of balancing the safety of Oklahoma children and teachers, while still ensuring ensuring children are able to continue learning.  Join us on Wednesday, August 5th for the August AIA Luncheon for a panel discussion with Dr. Rick Cobb, Superintendent of Mid-Del Public School; Craig McVay, Superintendent of El Reno Public Schools and Dr. Nick Migliorino, Superintendent of Norman Public Schools.  We will be holding this luncheon in two formats.  In person with a 50 person limit and virtual via Zoom.

A big thank you to our August Sponsors!  Bell & McCoy Lighting & Controls, Best Companies, CEC, Miller Tippens Construction, Nabholz Construction and Smith & Pickel Construction.

Dr. Rick Cobb is a life-long Oklahoman in his 27th year in education and fifth year as superintendent of Mid-Del Public Schools. He has been an English teacher, volleyball coach, principal, and assistant superintendent throughout the state prior to joining the district. He has earned degrees from the University of Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Dr. Cobb has been recognized for his service to the field of education by a number of state organizations. In 2019 he received the Medal for Excellence from the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence, the State Superintendent Fine Arts Medal of Excellence, and the Oklahoma Association of School Administrators District 7 Superintendent of the Year award.

In addition to his work in the district, Dr. Cobb is also an adjunct professor for Southern Nazarene University and the University of Central Oklahoma. He and his wife, Inger, have three adult children.

Craig McVay is the Superintendent of El Reno Public Schools in west central Oklahoma. McVay has served as Superintendent at El Reno since January of 2013. McVay is an experienced school administrator who has served as a teacher, counselor, principal, director and superintendent in several Oklahoma public schools. McVay is also certified by FEMA Refuge Evaluation and Safe Rook Design 101. McVay has published several newspaper articles and professional papers regarding the safety of students in Oklahoma public schools and the response of public officials following a disaster. McVay has taken an active role in the protection of students and community members over the last two decades.

Dr. Nick Migliorino has served as Superintendent of the Norman Public School District since July 1, 2017. He previously served for three years as Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services and Chief Technology Officer, where he provided oversight for bond projects and managed the district's maintenance, transportation, child nutrition health and technology divisions.

Migliorino was the district director of secondary education from 2008-2012, and a math teacher and coach at Irving Middle School from 1994-1997. His more than 20-year career also includes administrative positions with Moore, Tahlequah and Putnam City Public Schools. He earned his bachelor's degree in education from East Central University in Ada, his Master of Education from the University of Central Oklahoma, and his Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma.

AXP Friendly Firm Applications
The AIA Oklahoma AXP Friendly Firm program (formerly "intern friendly firm") began in 2006 to recognize those firms that go above and beyond to help intern architects advance in their career through leadership opportunities and assistance throughout the licensure process. The program is now called AXP Friendly Firms to highlight the importance of the Architectural Experience Program (AXP). AIA Oklahoma believes this program benefits both the interns and the firms that participate. It helps bridge the gap between education and experience by providing the tools necessary to achieve licensure. Firms benefit by creating an atmosphere of learning and professional growth, promoting professional development of staff so that more responsibility can be shared and fostering relationships among staff that create a positive environment which aids in retention of employees and a positive reputation among likely recruits. In the end the sharing of knowledge between those who have experience and those who are eager to learn benefits the profession as a whole.
