The value of networking and belonging

Mark Nevin

Message from the CEO: Networking increases your visibility within your industry, can help establish you as a thought leader or expert in your field and lead to opportunities, partnerships and collaborations.

When I arrived in Australia in 2014, I needed to build networks as I had done while working across Europe, firstly as an optometrist and later while leading policy and strategy for the optometry sector in the UK, Ireland and the European Union.

Like many of our members, I joined HISA to attend one of its conferences and was struck by the vibrant community atmosphere. I felt welcomed, supported and that I was joining a growing digital health movement. I extended my involvement by being elected to HISA’s NSW Branch, serving for three years as secretary, and later took on other volunteer positions in AIDH governing bodies.

The AIDH has extensive networks across health, research, industry, consumers, academia and government and lies at the heart of the digital health community. Engagement with the AIDH can provide valuable access to intelligence, learning opportunities and a chance to get to know the sector’s leaders.

The Institute offers unrivalled networking opportunities to access the nation’s leaders, movers and shakers in digital health.

For younger professionals, it may seem like you receive low return from networking in the beginning, from what can feel like awkward initial encounters. Please persevere and you’ll reap the dividends in the longer term. My advice is to use your AIDH membership to access our national, local and virtual events to connect, share perspectives and add your voice to those working in the industry. You can find our calendar of events here.

I would also like to thank our established membership base for continually welcoming all comers to the digital health community.

The AIDH community plays an integral role in delivering healthy lives, digitally enabled. We are proud to have you in our membership and encourage you to get the best value from it by networking, attending events and enrolling in our courses. Serving on the state committees is another way to take the next step and give back to your community. On that note, nominations for branch committees will open soon; please consider putting yourself forward!

Kind regards

Mark Nevin FAIDH

Interim CEO, Australasian Institute of Digital Health

AIDH says yes

AIDH says 'yes' to the Voice

We have joined more than 125 leading health and medical organisations in supporting a ‘yes’ vote for the Voice to Parliament. The alliance published an open letter to the Australian public in the media, stating it believes a Voice to Parliament will improve health and wellbeing outcomes for Indigenous Australians.

AIDH Board Chair Bettina McMahon emailed AIDH members on Friday on behalf of the Board of Directors explaining that the Institute supported a yes vote to the Voice.

While the Board recognised that members would make their own decision about their vote in the upcoming referendum, she said it encouraged members to consider the facts about how constitutional recognition of First Nations people in the form of a Voice could help close the gap and lead to healthier lives for our First Australians. It was also a Board strategic priority to provide leadership and advocacy, including articulating its position on key topics in digital health.

Australian Digital Health Agency

Participate in national framework and guideline's final consultation

The Australian Digital Health Agency in collaboration with the Australasian Institute of Digital Health (AIDH) is releasing the Australian Digital Health Capability Framework and the Quality in Data and Connecting Care Guideline for final consultation — two crucial components of the Digital Health Capability Action Plan.

We invite you to contribute to ensure that this framework and guideline reflect the needs and aspirations of the health and care sectors.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

Thank you for playing an integral role in informing these documents!

Have your say in modernising My Health Record

Have your say in modernising My Health Record

The Department of Health and Aged Care is seeking valued input from AIDH members to help modernise and improve sharing of information to My Health Record.

The Strengthening Medicare Taskforce Report recommended the government modernise My Health Record to increase health information available to consumers and healthcare professionals, including requiring sharing by default for practitioners and services, and making it easier for people and healthcare teams to use at the point of care.

The government is making changes to improve information sharing through better access (requiring healthcare providers to upload diagnostic imaging and pathology) and faster access (allowing consumers to see those reports without delay after being shared to My Health Record.)

DoHAC has begun consultation to collate feedback from stakeholders and the community during a pivotal early phase which will be vital in shaping necessary regulations, policies and support mechanisms for successful implementation. It strongly encourages you to participate by completing one or both consultation surveys.

Macquarie University online study - Can AI help with nursing assessments

Can AI help with nursing assessments?

Nurses and nursing students are invited to participate in an online study to see if providing nurses with AI can improve nursing assessments compared to standard practice.

Macquarie University Centre for Health Informatics PhD student Saba Akbar is testing the automated nursing risk assessment system. Registered nurses who have worked in adult, non-critical units in Australian hospitals in the past two years, final year nursing students and graduates from 2022 or later will review and complete six hypothetical patient scenarios using an AI system.

The study takes no longer than 45 minutes. Identifying information will remain confidential and be disclosed only with your permission except as required by law. The first 50 participants who complete the study will receive a $50 GiftPay egift card. Visit the study URL from a desktop or laptop computer.

Approved by Macquarie University Human Research Ethics Committee, the study is supervised by Prof Farah Magrabi FAIDH and Dr David Lyell FAIDH.

TAC launches new recovery program

New TAC program aims to improve patient outcomes

The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) has launched an innovative Enhanced Recovery Program in collaboration with The Clinician, which aims to enhance the quality of care and outcomes for TAC clients, particularly those recovering from injuries.

During the initial phase, a select group of clients and physiotherapists will participate and refine the program. The program spans up to 12 weeks and utilises the ZEDOC platform, developed by The Clinician, to collect client data. The platform employs patient-reported outcome measures and experience measures to inform clinical decisions and provide relevant educational materials.

Collected responses will help tailor treatment to individual needs, understand the injury’s impact, and identify potential long-term issues. This initiative aligns with TAC’s commitment to a value-based healthcare approach, focusing on improved outcomes and patient experiences. The collaboration builds on The Clinician’s successful technology implementations in healthcare settings across Australia.
