A governance milestone

Message from the CEO: The Institute is coming up to its third birthday in February 2023 – marking a significant milestone in the leadership and governance of Australia’s peak body for digital health. When the Australasian College of Health Informatics (ACHI) merged with the Health Informatics Society of Australia (HISA), the arrangements were that each organisation provided three board members, to be led by an independently appointed Chair. The constitution was written with terms for each board member to ensure corporate knowledge was retained. As members were initially appointed rather than voted onto the first Institute board, we have progressively cycled through those appointments to put them through the voting process.

We have now entered the final round of transition board voting, and former ACHI Chair Angela Ryan FAIDH and former HISA Chair Dr David Hansen FAIDH are up for re-election. In addition, after her one-year Board role, A/Prof Belinda Lange FAIDH is also re-nominating for the Board.

There has been a great response to this year’s call for nominations with 38 nominations for the three positions. The nominee statements can be found here.

E-voting closes Tuesday 11 October at 6.00pm AEDT. The results will be announced at the AGM on Tuesday 18 October 12.45pm AEDT.

Fellows and Members, please take the time to review the nominees and place your votes. And I am pleased to advise voting rights have been extended this year to retirees and students.

VOTE FOR YOUR BOARD

Thank you to all the candidates who are passionate about the future of the Institute and have offered their commitment to the broader digital health movement. Good luck to everyone!

Expert view: Speaking the language of nursing, midwifery and informatics

The Nursing.Midwifery Community of Practice has raised the changing role of leaders in digital health and in this month’s article, talks about positioning CNMIOs for success. Article author Dr Helen Almond FAIDH

says CNMIOs are well-positioned to be change agents within their respective health and care organisations. “This is due to their knowledge and experience with digital health transformation, as well as their leadership skills that allow for relationship building.” CNMIOs work in strategic innovation discussions as strategy interpreters; they speak the languages of nursing, midwifery, and informatics.

Survey: Impacts on nursing of adopting health technologies during the COVID-19 pandemic

Have you experienced changes in the use of technology during the recent pandemic? If you are a registered nurse in Australia, you may be interested in completing a survey looking at the impact of adopting digital health technologies on nursing during the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia [HREC35511].

This study is part of a larger international study led by Prof Dawn Dowding, United Kingdom, so it would be beneficial to have a large Australian contribution to this. The Australian component is being conducted by A/Prof Zerina Tomkins, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Monash University, Melbourne, and Dr Jen Bichel-Findlay, University of Technology Sydney.

Branch election results

Thank you to everyone who nominated in the recent Branch elections. There was a record number of nominations this year with five of the six Branches going to a member vote. It was a competitive election where we also saw a record number of members vote and ended in a tie break vote having to be sent back out to VIC and WA members to elect their committee members.
