Is outdated lab design costing you talent and time?

Too many labs remain hidden in basements — cut off from decision-makers, collaboration, and the heart of healthcare environments. This separation wastes resources, slows innovation, and limits labs’ impact on operational efficiency.

NextGen Labs redefine the laboratory. By placing labs at the center of healthcare facilities, organizations cut costs, accelerate discoveries, and create environments that attract and retain talent. Integrated and flexible, they’re built for adaptability, collaboration, and long-term growth.

Formaspace makes NextGen Labs possible. They design and manufacture modular lab furniture — like FLX service benches and RGX modular casework — that evolve with your needs. Built in USA and supported by tools like Revit and CET, their solutions streamline planning and delivery. Why NextGen Labs matter: • Lower costs with adaptable designs • Improve outcomes through connected, collaborative labs • Standardize with built-in flexibility • Simplify projects with one manufacturer for all spaces

Visit Booth #805 at HCD 2025 to learn more about how NextGen Labs redefine the laboratory.

Healthcare planners and FMs find a career resource in FMLink Job Board

Healthcare and medical facility management career positions are open nationwide. During World Workplace 2025, the shortage of qualified people to fill many vacant FM career positions, with more vacancies to come due to retirements, was widely discussed. The McMorrow Reports and FMLink team, observing the increasing demand for FMs, invested in creating and launching the FMLink Job Board in September 2025. With hundreds of positions listed and more to come, the Job Board is open to all facility and building managers and related professionals.

Healthcare built environment professionals thinking about a new opportunity will discover a wealth of jobs listed, many with signing bonuses. We encourage healthcare professionals to visit the FMLink Job Board and search for positions using “healthcare facility management,” “hospital facility manager” and “medical facility manager” to seek positions. Healthcare FMs and planners can register to use the site, browse the postings, upload a resume, and apply for a new opportunity, such as these:

IFHE urges global discussion on shared healthcare facilities challenges

Healthcare facilities managers (FMs) grapple each day to address issues that shape patient experience and safety. Kevin Poggenpoel, president of The International Federation of Healthcare Engineering (IFHE), points out that many of these challenges impact FMs across the world. Through participation in global discussions, FMs gain a unique perspective into how their peers around the world are creating safer, more resilient environments – and an opportunity to impact the health and safety of patients worldwide.

From October 17 to 20, 2026, IFHE will provide such an opportunity for U.S. facilities and PDC managers to connect with their peers from around the world. The Association of Medical Facility Professionals (AMFP), the U.S. representative to IFHE, in partnership with EmeraldX, is hosting the 2026 World Congress in New Orleans. The event will be co-located with the Healthcare Design (HCD) Conference + Expo, providing access to a powerful combination of healthcare design, engineering and facilities management expertise. Read more . . .

Marberry: Creating a high-quality healthcare workplace experience

By Sara Marberry — How do you create a high-quality healthcare workplace experience? That was the topic of a 35-minute panel discussion I moderated at the Hospital, Outpatient Facilities & Medical Office Buildings Summit last week in Chicago. My all-star panel (L-R in photo) included:

  • Margie Gauthier, Operations Director, Shirley Ryan Ability Lab
  • Stasia Suleiman, Regional Healthcare Practice Area Leader, Interior Design Director, Gensler
  • Michael Shur, Global Wellness Leader, Gensler
  • Sara Marberry, healthcare design expert
  • Loriann Duffy, Executive Director, Operational Excellence/RESO, Providence

Michael and Stasia started off the discussion by sharing some of Gensler’s research to frame our thinking. Key findings:

  • Only 38% of the global workforce love their workplace experience.
  • A great workplace experience positively impacts behaviors.
  • Amenities are not optional. They are an important part of the experience within the workplace as well as beyond the workplace in the neighborhood.
  • A great experience impacts attitudes, such as employee engagement, happiness, motivation, and meaning. Read more . . .

Charging Up: Reinforcing health care facility energy infrastructure with organic flow battery technology

Climate change is increasing the prevalence of severe weather events, straining the power grid, threatening the public’s access to reliable energy infrastructure and presenting particularly significant challenges in the health care sector. Unreliable energy access poses a serious risk to critical healthcare systems – sometimes with life-changing impacts.

Between 2011 and 2021, the annual number of weather-related power outages in the U.S. alone increased by roughly 78 percent, highlighting the need for climate resilient-infrastructure, especially in industries like health care where access to energy can mean the difference between life or death for some patients. Health care facilities rely on consistent energy access in a more serious manner than many other structures.
