AIHEC WEEKLY UPDATE

The Collective Spirit and Unifying Voice of our Nation's Tribal Colleges and Universities

HIGHLIGHTS

TCU Presidents Testify at the USDA Tribal Advisory Committee

At this week’s USDA Tribal Advisory Committee meeting President Monte Randall (College of the Muscogee Nation) testified on behalf of AIHEC and emphasized the need for increased funding for facilities, research, and extension at Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), while also noting the negative impacts of current federal actions. “1994 institutions support job creation, poverty reduction, and prosperity in Tribal communities,” stated President Randall.

Additional TCU presidents provided testimony on behalf of their respective institutions. President Brad Hall highlighted Blackfeet Community College’s new meat processing program and its importance to the Tribes food sovereignty initiatives. Further, President Elmer Guy of Navajo Technical University raised concerns about funding cuts affecting youth, internship, and veterinary programs on campus.

AIHEC requests that the Secretary of Agriculture visit our nation’s Tribal Colleges and Universities and see firsthand the great work our 1994 Land-grant institutions are doing and the services they provide to their communities.

Tribal Scholars for Health & Sustainability (TSHS) Program

We’re excited to share that our Tribal Scholars for Health & Sustainability (TSHS) Program is officially up and running!

TSHS is a virtual educational opportunity designed for current students and recent graduates who are passionate about public health and ready to make a real impact in Tribal communities. Through this program, Scholars will gain hands-on experience in public health and policy, working side by side with professionals dedicated to improving health outcomes across Indian Country.

Whether your interests lie in environmental health, infectious diseases, maternal and child health, public health infrastructure, federal relations, or other vital areas—TSHS offers tailored project experiences that align with your passions. This is more than a learning opportunity—it's a chance to grow your skills, expand your professional network, and contribute to meaningful change in Tribal public health.

Highlights of the program include:

  • Virtual format for flexible participation
  • A $3,600 educational award for all selected Scholars
  • Travel support to attend an in-person training in Washington, D.C.
  • Open to all eligible applicants, including students enrolled in Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) and recent graduates

We believe in creating space for the next generation of leaders in public health—especially those who may not typically have access to these types of opportunities.

Please help us spread the word, and if you know students or recent grads who may be interested, encourage them to apply!
