It’s all happening in Canberra!
|
Information, statistics, questions, answers, inspiration, expert advice … and incredible olive-based food. That’s what delegates attending the 2023 Australian National Olive Conference & Exhibition in Canberra are experiencing. And that’s just the feedback from Day 1!
After an amazing meal last night created especially for our event by Chef Shui Kabir and the team at the Canberra Institute of Technology Restaurant, with every dish re-imagined to feature AEVOO and/or Australian table olives, we’re all back on deck today for the Day 2 program of the annual industry info-fest.
And then counting down for the other industry ‘big event’, the Australian International Olive Awards Presentation Dinner, being held tonight following the Conference.
Best of luck to all Gold medal winners in the running for the major awards, and congratulations to all of 2023’s medal winners. We’ll share news of the big winners in next week’s edition of FOE.

GROWER TO GROWER
Have a question? Need some advice? Ask a fellow grower!
The FOE team regularly hears from growers with questions about grove or production practices, or equipment, that they just can’t find the answers to. They’re things other producers are likely know about and/or experienced themselves. So we’ve set up a new Friday Olive Extracts feature, Grower to Grower, where you can send your questions and have them answered by your peers.
Just send the details to editor@olivegrower.com.au and we’ll put them out to the Friday Olive Extracts community - that’s thousands of readers across the globe.

Living and working in a rural area is a rich and rewarding experience in so many ways, but it can also be isolating. When Jackie Elliot moved to Byaduk in Victoria’s Southern Grampians, finding her people was difficult. However, she went on to do more than simply make personal connections – founding the Australian brand of “Rural Women’s Day”.
Time’s running out for an October 2023 event, so this one’s here as inspiration for next year.

EOIs invited for Victorian small scale producers’ co-operative
|
Attention: small scale olive producers of Victoria, Australia!
Do you manage up to 3000 trees? Would you like to increase the profitability of your olive related activities? Do you want to free up some time for the other important things in life besides olives?
Expressions of interest are currently sought from Victorian growers with up to 3000 trees under owner management to determine the feasibility of establishing a co-operative enterprise for small scale producers.
If you would like to participate in the initial interviews, please select a time from this calendar which suits you to receive a phone call or join a Zoom meeting hosted by Ceilidh (KAY-lee) Meo from Apulia Grove Olives.
Ceilidh said she’s had very positive interest to date, and there’s still time for others to touch base and look into the concept before the initiative moves forward.

Leaf drop mystery
Several groves in Wairarapa have reported increased leaf drop only in the tops of their trees. It’s a mystery as to why this is happening.
Olives New Zealand EO Emma Glover is looking into it and is keen to hear from anyone also experiencing tree top leaf drop, and/or has a theory about the cause. If that’s you, please email Emma at admin@olivesnz.org.nz.

Chef Kalel Chan prepares special dishes using olive oil. Philstar.com/Kristofer Purnell.
Manila, Philippines - Olive oil is not an unfamiliar ingredient when creating recipes, but one restaurant is highlighting several dishes that in one way or another use olive oil for a different twist on Mediterranean cuisine.
We were happy to read about a Filipino chef celebrating the versatility of olive oil – but not so much about most of the dishes using ‘pure olive oil’ or ‘pomace olive oil’.

The olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae, was recorded attacking olives in ancient times and has long been a formidable pest in the Mediterranean basin.
Another critter we do not want to get into Australia – more proof of the need for our strict biosecurity measures.
