AISD elementary schools to receive two STEM labs

All Arlington ISD elementary schools will receive two new STEM - science, technology, engineering and math - labs as part of the 2014 Bond package. The labs are part of a larger scope of work scheduled for each elementary, including a new strings room (read more about the strings rooms in next month's bond newsletter) and facility upgrades and replacements. Architects are currently developing the plans for the labs, and construction will begin at the first elementaries in March 2016.

The AISD will engage several qualified firms to provide professional architecture/engineering services for the 2014 Bond Program Phase III, in accordance with the terms, conditions, and requirements set forth in this Request for Qualifications.

Proposals due Oct. 29, 2 p.m.

Bond construction is underway
Facilities Update
After many months of planning, the first construction projects funded by the 2014 Bond package are underway.

The AISD took full advantage of the summer months to get a lot of work done at Workman Junior High, Ousley Junior High and Ferguson Education Center. These projects are just the beginning though  as all AISD campuses will receive improvements during the bond's five-year implementation. In fact, by next summer, 44 schools will have construction projects underway or already finished. The bond is also funding several new districtwide facilities, along with two new elementary schools.

Elimination of instrument fees sparks student involvement
Fine Arts Update

As part of the 2014 Bond package, the AISD eliminated instrument fees for students in August 2014. This attempt to remove barriers so more students can participate in fine arts seems to have paid off immediately with increased student participation in the 2014-2015 school year. Bond funds are helping pay for the additional instruments and replace older instruments with higher quality pieces.

Schools receive new security cameras over the summer
Safety, Security and Technology Update

The AISD security department worked hard over the summer to install new security cameras funded by the 2014 Bond package. While all AISD campuses will get new cameras over the course of the bond package's five-year implementation plan, wiring for the first 24 schools will be complete by the end of this year. So far, seven schools have been wired and had the new cameras installed.

Transportation department tests new tracking system
The AISD transportation department used the summer to get the new Zonar system ready for the new school year. "We have been tracking 30 students on seven buses to make sure that the GPS is working correctly and to make sure that the Zonar is reading and tracking the student data," explained Debbie Swenson, regular education router foreman for the AISD transportation department.

Zonar will improve the safety and security of the AISD transportation system. It has now been installed on all AISD school buses and, once fully operational ...
