Project: AISD Marshall Middle School

For a Thriving Neighborhood, a New School

Austin Independent School District identified a need for a new middle school in Austin’s fast-growing Mueller neighborhood in northeast Austin. To meet the needs of this community, a new, modern, 3-story building serving 800 students was commissioned. The new campus includes a large gym, track and field facilities, tennis courts, and miscellaneous site retaining walls.

The project architect, LPA Architects, designed the new building to pay homage to the location of the campus as a former airport- the roof of the northern part of the building is designed to mimic the shape of an airplane wing. This architectural feature required Encotech to carefully design large cantilevers at the roof and carefully document and detail the unique geometry to ensure the architectural vision was met.

Encotech provided MEP and structural engineering design to the project team.

When Ali Khataw isn’t in Austin, he is often roaming the African Serengeti toting his camouflaged telephoto lens while teaching others how to see and capture the image of a lifetime. Photography and education are both longtime passions for Khataw, an engineering CEO and influential figure in local economic development.

Khataw acquired an affinity for built structures from his father, who worked in construction and moved the family frequently as projects took him to places such as Bangladesh, Hong Kong, and England.
