AISJ receives $20,000 COVID Capacity Grant from League of Conservation Voters Education Fund

Alabama Institute for Social Justice (AISJ) is proud to announce that it has been awarded a $20,000 COVID Capacity Grant from the League of Conservation Voters Education Fund (LCVEF), an organization dedicated to building an anti-racist environmental movement. AISJ was recommended to receive the LCVEF award by one of its partners, Conservation Alabama Foundation, which cited AISJ as an organization whose work is invaluable to the community in advancing this goal, particularly during this moment of crisis and social change.

AISJ's working partnership with Conservation Alabama Foundation is rooted in our mutual desire to ensure that the decisions made by our local, state, and national elected officials will protect the people and places we love. Together, we are seeking to increase voter participation in the democratic political process and mobilize an active, diverse network of people to advocate for sound environmental policies and practices. By listening to each other, and identifying the values and priorities we share, we are helping to turn our love for Alabama and its people into laws that will protect our state’s families and communities.

One of the ways in which we are working to maximize our collective capacity and community impact is by putting specific tools in the hands of those we serve, with the goal of empowering them to confidently express their needs at the polls. We are providing over 5,000 voter ID assistance cards to our constituents through VoteRiders, a resource made available through our collaboration with Conservation Alabama Foundation. We are also working together to advance the Alabama Black Belt National Heritage Area Act. Passage of this legislation would leverage funding for long-term projects that would have substantial economic and environmental benefits for the state's Black Belt communities in 19 counties.

"The efforts of LCVEF and Conservation Alabama Foundation represent the dynamic power and strength that increases when organizations work together for the greater good," says AISJ executive director Lenice Emanuel. "The results are a testament to our ability to accomplish more together."
